Went with Thomson holidays . Rooms ok but bland. Petty charges of 3 euros p day for safe and fridge , surely in a 4star hotel this is part of the package. Also 10 euros for towel hire is another petty charge even if it is refundable.
The food was ok . I would say 3.5 stars rating.

had a great week at the Riviera. The weather was very good, only half a day of rain. The recent revamp was very smart, lovely bedroom and bathroom. The whole hotel seemed spotless, staff very pleasant and smiling! Thomson rep, Christina, is a credit, so friendly and informative as she is Spanish. The downside for us was the pool, although new and clean, it was ice cold. Shame it wasn't even slightly heated, as we do like to swim. I only managed half a lap and thought I might have a heart attack! The indoor Spa area.....used to be an indoor pool, maybe it should have stayed that way. Yes its modern with slate like tiling but the hot tub/jaccuzi was almost cold, far from the usual hot tub temperature, and the therapy pool had 2 neck/shoulder massage sprays and that pool water was cold too. Was told the massages were good and on special deal at 20 euros for 40 mins !!! You have to pay 3 euros per day for the safe and mini fridge if you want to use them. DO have the safe, there is pick pocket and general theft in the area and also the hotel. One lady had her purse taken from her bag whilst sitting in the hotel lounge. We had no problems ourselves. Opposite main entrance is a very busy main road, but a selection of bars to get good drinks and snack meals. Local buses are very good value and frequent. If you fancy a white knuckle ride....try the cable car ride. It's good value at 6.40 euros from hotel rep and takes about 20 mins each way. I had asked for a high floor with sunny aspect and was very happy with our room 810, top floor. Shall visit again, great location. Well done 'Riviera'.

Room Tip: high floor, pool view gets sunrise and marina view, other side has more sunny balcony.

this hotel really is worth its four stars, brilliant location right by the sea and only a few mins walk to the harbour area. being built on the cliff the hotel facilities are on a few different levels and although most levels can be accessed by using a series of lifts the disabled may find this limits their access to the gardens, although right on the main road the poor quality of the pavements may also make getting around the area difficult for those who find walking difficult. he hotels food was nicely done and we would recommend using the al a carte restaurant where the food and service is first class. The beds are big American style and the rooms clean bright and airy. the staff seem to enjoy working here and this shows in the excellent service they give. wonderful views, nice big comfy rooms , attentive staff we did not want to leave this hotel

Room Tip: the balconies for rooms on the ground floor are a bit public

The Medplaya Riviera Hotel was refurbished in 2013, and is generally of a good standard. The rooms have his/her washbasins, full bath and shower facilities and fantastic super king sized beds (over 2.0 metres in width), and flat screen TV's.
Several downsides still exist however for clients: The hotel is bounded by the Mediterranean on one side and the coast road between Malaga and Marbella on the other. The rooms closer to the road suffer from traffic noise which is lessened by double glazing - however it is the case that sitting on the balconies can be very noisy..
The Hotel has 8 floors, and only 2 x 6 person maximum lifts which can become busy at times requiring queueing.
There are two restaurants : a buffet help yourself restaurant, and an a la carte one. There are nice touches for clients having the choice of freshly made 'show cooking' as well as a Tapas table. Complimentary Cava at breakfast is also welcome, setting the Riviera apart from other local hotels.
Both restaurants however are poor in the provision of vegetarian meals - clients are often presented with one choice of veggie meal, which often seems as an afterthought,. Vegetarians suffer this lack of choice despite paying the same holiday costs as carnivore clients, who as other reviewers state are adequately catered for .
Examples of this vegetarian main course 'choice' last week when I stayed there, were ' Mushrooms on toast ' and on another night 'cheese pasty' which was a puff pastry shell in which there was supposed to be a slice of cheese - sadly this important ingredient was missed. Other clients were offered a choice of 8 or 9 different main courses.

A little thought by the chef would have made a considerable difference for the better.. Why was beef and other meats added to perfectly good veggie soups, and salads ? Could they not be offered separately thereby not confining vegetarians to a lack of choice ?
Of the 14 or so tapas offered nightly perhaps 2 were vegetarian (duchesse potato swirls)..

I have been vegetarian for 46 years and have travelled extensively. I have stayed at other hotels with less stars in Benalmedina area. They cater for vegetarians much better than the Riviera. Unfortunately, the Riviera does not deserve its 4 star rating if it continues to discriminate against vegetarian clients...

Room Tip: The Mediterranean side has great views and the sun mostly until mid afternoon

Stayed mid March for a week as a solo traveller. Food was of a high standard and really enjoyed the pancakes at breakfast. The tapas corner in the evening was a lovely addition. Rooms are very nicely decorated with very comfortable bed and pillows. A special mention has to be made of Cristina the Thomsons rep. She always seems to be on duty and nothing is too much trouble and always ready to give advice. Thank you Cristina. Will definitely visit the Riviera again.

Room Tip: Stayed in room 425 which is close to elevator so a bit noisy and also doesnt get much sun

Just returned after two glorious weeks at the Riviera! Cannot fault this hotel, excellent facilities and beautifully clean and comfortable! Staff were friendly and smiley with the best staff entertainment duo I've ever known.. Kept us laughing for start to finish. Food was good and the Spa a great facility with the lovely Eva in charge.. Well worth a facial or massage treat!
Came home reluctantly but determined to do it all again asap!

Room Tip: There is road noise but as we closed the door during the night we never heard a thing And everyth...

As a solo traveller I am used to having rooms next to lift shafts but my room on the 5th floor was great, modern, clean yes it was next to the lift shaft but not particularly noisy. The room faced the pool which I would imagine in high summer is one of the better rooms as I had beautiful sunrises but lost the sun in the afternoon though again the rooms were so warm for March that I often ended up opening the balcony door even though I had turned heating off. This was one of the first hotels where it has been stated there is show cooking and there actually was and the pancakes and omelettes for breakfast are amazing. Also the fact that there was fried bread and it was crisp. In fact I couldn't fault the food at all, if there was anything it would be the restaurant staff who seemed to make a bee line for couples but as a single traveller I felt a little as though I had to ask for most things - especially coffee in a morning. All in all though it was a great hotel that helped make it a great holiday.
