“Top hotel let down by a few minor niggles”
Reviewed June 29, 2013

The Hotel riviera is a top hotel situated right on the Benelmadena promenade. Completely refurbished (May 2013) to a high standard throughout. Our room was on the 7th floor and on the pool side at the road end.

The rooms are lovely, spacious, modern and clean. A comfortable seven foot wide bed, two chairs and a coffee table, 32 inch plasma TV with a number of English channels, reasonable sized balcony, bath and shower along with his and her wash basins. Hair dryer, tea and coffee supplied (along with kettle and cups/glasses). Also excellent double glazing which cut out all road noise and an effective (and quiet) air-con unit.

The hotel itself was well appointed, the reception staff were very helpful (and spoke pretty good English) and the Thomson rep was excellent. The dining room was spacious and the food was fine. Food though is a very personal area but in our opinion the breakfast buffet offered a good choice including cooked English, cold meats and cheeses, breads and conserves, fruit, porridge, cereals, eggs, omelettes and pancakes. For evening there was always meat, fish, tapas, show cooking (meat or fish cooked to order), salads, vegetables, etc. I did hear some moans about the food but it was all well cooked and it is hard to see what else they could do.

Around the hotel was a nice pool area, plenty of sunbeds, a small gym and the normal poolside bar serving drinks and food. We cannot comment on the hotel bars (never went) or the entertainment (ditto).

So what were the minor niggles. Being asked to pay 3 euros a day for the safe, 3 euros a day for the fridge, 20 euros for 2 weeks wifi in the room (in fairness it was free in the reception area), 40 euros deposit for two pool towels (you got it back but is was still a lot to ask for two towels) also my wife would mention the cleaning of the rooms/balcony - which was ok, just not great. The gym was in name only, one running machine, one cross trainer, two bikes and a small weight machine, great view though over the Med.

In summary we had a great holiday, the hotel is fine, the food is good, the location is excellent, the pool and sunbathing area is excellent and the rooms are as good as you get at this price. Would we go again, of course we would - just suspect the price will be high next year.

A little recommendation for you, if you visit the area and go to the Arroyo de la Miel market on the Friday, a call into 'Cupcakes and Dreams' for an English cup of tea and a cake, is well worth the visit.

Room Tip: In our view the higher the better. Poolside benefits from a better view (the marina) and shelter fro...

Arrived home on 27th June, weather gorgeous, good food in hotel except the pasta didn't look or wasn't well presented either, the bedrooms are great, beds are huge, shower brilliant no complaints, the entertainment was hit and miss the four tops, chaplain the circus act, the magician were very good, the switch resident duo tried their best but were poor we thought, the pool and surrounding area were clean, you still get the same old problem of same people going down early to put towels on beds (pathetic), there are signs saying not to do so but hotel and lifeguard does nothing about it and until they do it will keep happening!, in the fortnight that we spent at hotel there was only one day they had lollipops or ice cream at pool bar, my husband and myself had to share a lollipop, we asked on a daily basis, nothing, in the end my husband either went across the road or down on the prom for ice cream, I told the thomson rep and hotel reception they didn't believe me, we have never been to a hotel and come across this problem before. Come on riviera it's high season sort it, too late for us but your losing money. We lost patience!! We did enjoy our holiday met and spoke to some lovely people, I hope that some of these things I have highlighted will be sorted as soon as. We did also think that with this standard of hotel wifi should be free in bedroom it is down in communal areas what's the difference, money spinner and its wrong we all work and save hard for our holidays, the same applies to fridge in room, wrong should be free.

just got back from the hotel think the refurbishment is very good, love the beds.the hairdryers are really good didn,t use my own once, food okay but beans a bit cold in the morning, just a word about the bacon it does say crispy bacon so that is why it is well done. kettles in the room really welcome ,the reception really quick there was approx 15 couples when we checked in only took us about 5 mins.never stayed in hotel for entertainment but most guest seemed to enjoy it.one complaint was the wardrobe it was not long enough for dresses to hang, but overall a good clean friendly hotel would recommend to anyone.
lots of sunbeds but on our way home one lady was putting her towels out at 6.45, sad really!
i do think some kind of recognition should be given to repeat guest,an hotel that we go to in ibiza always leaves a bottle of wine in the rooms of repeat guests.

just had a brilliant week at this hotel, the refurbishment has been done really well, the rooms were well equipped with tea and coffee, kettle and bottled water, mini fridge (3 euro a day), lovely comfortable beds, in room safe and air conditioning (which does not go off when you take your key out of slot). The bathroom was really big with a huge walk in shower, towels were changed everyday, you had complimentary toiletries. The restaurant food was of good quality which was replenished regularly and was always hot, you had one night per week where you could go to the al e carte restaurant. The pool area was well maintained with more than enough beds and umbrella's, I cant understand how anybody could not like this hotel or resort!!!

Room Tip: rooms overlooking the pool have the best view, other other side overlooks the car park

Just had one week here - 3 adults sharing one room-each pay the same, but one has to sleep in a camp bed???? Room was a decent size and bath nice, however the bath/shower is slippery - they need bathmats. Friends also staying there this week - one of them slipped in the shower and cut her head (Management please note this). Staff were all quite friendly and helpful in most cases. However, the food is dire - so boring - the same nearly every day- choice is very limited - and some of it is either not cooked properly or overcooked. The "Show Cooking" Chef seems to be limited to cooking just two pieces of meat at a time, despite the restaurant being full? So you give up waiting and go back to the buffet. Two of us had dodgy tums - we think it was the sausages at breakfast time, plus we know of a couple of others who had the same thing. The visit of the Cockroach in the restaurant one morning at breakfast time really says it all! There he was gaily strolling along the middle of the restaurant floor, no doubt after the crumbs left from the night before - Well done to the brave waitress who killed him for us - the waiters all had disappeared. I don't know what it is about hotels on the costa del sol - they are all so poor compared with their sister hotels on the Canaries they need to wake up and up their act. My husband (who is Spanish) overheard one of the barmen in the pool bar tell his colleague when a guest asked for a particular brand of gin, to say they didn't have any because he didn't want to go upstairs and get that gin for him! MANAGEMENT teach your staff that guests can understand Spanish!!!

No complaints whatsoever with the Riviera - it ticks all the boxes for an "adults only" hotel.
Excellent refurbishment throughout - bedrooms spacious with huge comfortable bed and quality duvet. Plenty of room to move around and little or no noise when the balcony door was closed. The provision of a kettle, tea/coffee in the room was a plus. Wall mounted flat screen TV opposite the bed. Good lighting in the room plus a reading light at the 2 bedside tables.
The cleanliness throughout the hotel was to a very high standard. I liked the fact that there was a dress code in the restaurant for dinner. The majority of guests did make the effort and I think this will help retain the high standard of the hotel.
Plenty of loungers poolside plus some sunbathing areas on the grass area leading down to the promenade.
Spacious main lounge with additional seating area on outside decking.
There is also a large soft seating room if you want some quiet time plus another small room with the internet ( 1 euro for 15 mins.) and a pool table.
On the roof, just above the street level, there is a multi-sport area which has a large shuffleboard, crazy golf and French Boules pitch.
It's only a 5/10 min. stroll along to the marina and there are plenty of bars, shops and restaurants in the vicinity.
The Riviera must surely now be one of the best hotels in Benalmadena.

Room Tip: Rooms looking towards the marina will get the morning sun.

Arrived home today from the Riviera, had a really lovely holiday with my boyfriend and parents. First impression of hotel was "WAW" - the location is fab, beautiful sea view from pool area, very stylish furniture in and around the hotel, best part was the room - beds are amazingly comfortable and are huge!! View from balcony was gorgeous, however, did not catch much sun on pool side view (as seen on other reviews). The pool was a little small, however, the beach was literally over the road.

Food - Great selection of food, very tasty. Variation that fits everyone. The standard of food seemed to slip towards the end of our holiday, but yet was still enjoyable and was able to try new things. If you didn't like something you were able to get a fresh plate and go get something else. MEN NEED TO WEAR TROUSERS AT EVENING MEAL OR NOT ALLOWED INTO THE DINNING AREA (bit daft).

The main thing that was a huge put off was the amount of old people that were at the hotel, although I appreciated that it's meant for couples and they tend to be the older generation, there was no atmosphere at all around the pool area or in the evenings - my partner and I are 23 and felt like we were being looked down on a lot. Just a warning to any young couples looking to stay at this hotel that it does attract a lot of snobby old people. Although a there were some that were lovely and friendly.

Entertainment was terrible, plenty of bars around that are much cheaper and have more life in them.

Good location overall and lovely trips available.

Marina is amazing and worth a visit and a moonlight boat trip, very pretty.

Overall we enjoyed our holiday minus a few negative points that you tend to get everywhere you go.

Room Tip: BEDS ARE AMAZING so get a good alarm clock to make sure you get yourself out of them!!
