I spent the whole of the final week of january 2013 at Gasthouse Faschian with my parents to enjoy the last days of winter in Germany. The following are my comments but summarily i would like to say the place deserves a 5 star.
the place was quite tricky to find but with a good GPS (i used Sygic for Android) you can find it without much hassle. Driving is a must no matter where you come from. We drove from Basel Airport and the roads leading to Todtmoos were somewhat challenging for the faint hearted but it the view from the place was nothing short of extraordinary (it is literally located in the center of Germany's famed Black Forest). The village's supermarket, Schmidt-Markt was nearby (around 800m from the guesthouse) but the nearest district for any shopping to be done was 15km away in Wehr (they have Schmidt-Markt, Lidl, Kont Tekstil Diskont etc.).
We were greeted by Ingrid, the manager (perhaps the owner of the house) and her English was passable although her father who was the housekeeper could have learned some basic English for ease of communication. Ingrid and her stunningly beautiful daughter Anya tirelessly and patiently handled our requests and questions. When we supposedly misplaced our room and house keys, Anya was really helpful by traveling to the guesthouse to help us look for it while we were away in Basel. The only complain we all have would be the internet connection which goes up and down (and down most of the time at night) and i have seen better speeds too but general emailing and IM were fine.
When we first saw the room we were shocked to see the level of attention and detail poured into ensuring the guests had a good time. Each part of the room was huge and the decorations were far from tasteless (save for the green curtains). Power sockets were abundant and they even have vanilla scented soap. They provided copious amount of garbage bags, vacuum bags, and enough cleaning paraphernalias to last for months. The kitchen cabinet was also well stocked with quality utensils and cooking items and seasoning. Singapore Airport mismanaged our suitcases including our food supplies but the kitchen had enough seasoning to provide for good meals (my mum cooked throughout the stay).
All in all, Guesthouse Faschian is more than a mere guesthouse. It really exceeded expectations from well heeled travelers like me and my parents (we have traveled the world for more than 25 years). Despite the location and lack of proper english speaking environment, the place performed well. The only drawback was the internet but that wasnt enough to bring the score down.
A definite place for anyone wishing to stray into the path less traveled.
