Review of Hotel Meridian
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Apr 5, 2013via mobile
Stayed there on my business trip, very nice. Near the walking zone. You cannot hear the tram. Very nice city during Christmas time. Breakfast was great. Staff was very friedly to expect me late in the evening. Was nice that in the room was bottles of water every day. The room was cleaned every day.

Rooms are large, very cosy and very clean. Wonderful buffet breakfast at a very convenient price (4 €). The personnel is very kind and helpful. The location is right in the town centre and the price is top. Free wireless internet access included.

This hotel is not affiliated with the ACCOR hotel group. I think that it is named after the 15th Meridian, which runs through the eastern part of town.

We stayed here in September of 2010. We were curious about Gorlitz, after reading about it in the Rick Steve's guidebook. However, all of the hotels in Gorlitz, which were recommended by Rick Steves, were sold out for the first weekend of September, so we took a chance on the Hotel Meridian - and are glad that we did.

The room was the largest of any we stayed in, during our recent trip through Europe ( Germany, mostly ). The bed was nice - I slept soundly. There was a new flat screen color TV in the room - but no English language channels ( German and Polish, only ). The breakfast buffet was included in the rate, and they would even make you ham & eggs, if you asked. The bathroom was clean and big enough - shower only, no tub. There is a sauna in the basement, but I did not use it. There is no elevator in the hotel. The hotel is not air-conditioned.

The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the train station. It looked like it was going to rain, when we arrived in Gorlitz, so we took a taxi to the hotel. Now, you should also know that another thing that you will not find much of at the hotel - or in Gorlitz - is anyone who can speak English. You MUST have your German phrase book and/or pocket dictionary with you at all times, while in Gorlitz. I had intended to teach myself German before going on this trip, but was too busy with work to make much progress, before I left.

None of the restaurants in town had English menus, except for the Piwnica Staromiejska restauraunt, which is actually in Poland, on the other side of the Old Town pedestrian bridge ( dirt cheap - dinner for 2, with drinks, less than $40 - and they take Visa ). As one of the few towns in Germany that was not destroyed during WW2, Gorlitz is a must see place. Most of the town has been beautifully preserved. If you walk across the bridge into Poland, you will see a part of the town which has been not so well preserved ( called Zgorzelec, after the borders were re-drawn after WW2 ). The beautiful Hertie department store in Gorlitz has gone bankrupt. I guess too many of the locals were shopping at the Carrefour hypermarket on the Polish side, in Zgorzelec.

Do visit Gorlitz, if you are in the eastern part of Germany. Just wander through the beautiful streets. And do stay at the Hotel Meridian, as it is very clean and comfortable - I had my best nights sleep there. Just don't forget your phrase book, unless you are already fluent in German.
