We've been coming to Valmorel for over 20 years and have eaten at Le Grenier on numerous occasions as it is ideally placed for lunch on the slopes. However, after our experience yesterday we shall not be returning. I sat down to have a coffee and wait for my family to join me. The first thing I was asked was whether I was on my own! I could have understood this if I the restaurant had been really busy but as there were mostly empty tables I was puzzled. I brazened this out, ordered my coffee and when the waiter returned my children had joined me so I ordered them drinks too. I paid for these and the waiter threw the change at me. My husband turned up a little later and we had the fiasco of ordering food. In the past Le Grenier has operated a self service facility at lunchtime making it ideal for families. This had changed and the (same) waiter told us we couldn't order off the menu only the limited choice from the board. He was very rude , unbelievably patronising, for example refusing to understand what we meant by 'badoit' and saying 'you can always say it in English' then to tell us that they only had Perrier anyway. When the food came, the same waiter bought it to the table and he was carrying far too much. Consequently he shouted at me to take the plate with the salad on it before he dropped it and I went for the wrong one and he had a go at me for getting it wrong. He was extremely unpleasant and we shall certainly not be returning there on account of his behaviour alone. Unfortunately the food was not good either. There was no bread with the charcuterie plate. The jambon sec was thickly cut and virtually inedible. My daughter had a large lump of salt in the pâté. The salade savoyarde had no dressing, some of the potatoes were black and green and generally had no seasoning. For 9 euros, saucisse frites was 1 cold sausage straight out of a packet and a few chips. Not good.
