We wanted (as a family) to camp in the Alps, in a wide field, with perhaps a few other tents and caravans around us but to still feel as if we had Mont Blanc and the mountains to ourselves. And Camping Les Domes de Miage are just want we wanted. We were lucky to turn up mid-August and there were spaces and they are huge pitches, spread apart, some with electricity. Really good showers and service block, small reception shop and bread pre-ordering available. Small playground for younger kids but no wild pool - which aids the peaceful setting.

I had read many good reviews for this campsite and it lives up to every single good report. The surroundings are amazing and the nearby towns of Saint Gervais and Les Contamines Montjoie are really lovely. The site is an absolute credit to the owners who I feel look after their site like an extension of their own home. They are really friendly, helpful people (and their huge friendly dog is lovely ... often guarding reception by lying straight across the doorway or sprawled flat out on the mat inside).

You can buy a few essentials at reception, order fresh bread for the following day and get free ice. There are leaflets for local attractions and the owners will happily advise of things to do. If you are planning a trip through the Mont Blanc tunnel ask them about their card/pass which you can use if available and return the card and receipt slip when you get back to site, then when you pay your bill they will charge you a vastly discounted rate on what you would have paid in tunnel tolls directly.

There are plenty of facilities (washrooms/showers/toilets/sinks for washing up etc) and it is all very clean and tidy. There is free WiFi available but the signal was pretty sketchy and I imagine worked better near reception. The netbook seemed to pick up the signal better than the phone by the tent.

We visited towards the end of June and took advantage of low season rates. At this time the majority of the lifts are open in nearby Chamonix so there is plenty of sightseeing to do. There are also lots of possibilities for walking/hiking... the road ends a few km past Les Contamines at Notre Dame de la Gorge and there is loads of carparking available. There is a little Carrefour Montagne in Les Contamines for shopping and I think an Intermarche and a Casino supermarket in nearby towns. here are petrol station on the main road between Saint Gervais and Chamonix. There is a really big Carrefour in nearby Sallanches which is about 25 minutes drive away.

Room Tip: We pitched our tent in a small area surrounded by trees at the end of the campsite so we had no passing people or cars other than the two small caravans pitched near us. Not all the site has electric but this indicated on a map you will be given when you come in. Through the trees behind our tent you could see the top of snow covered Mont Blanc. Beautiful.

I have recently returned from a long trip through several European countries. In the Alpine region of France we came across this site quite by accident. It turned out to be the highlight of the entire trip. The location is simply breathtaking and the campsite is maintained better than any other we have come across. The local area has many restaurants and places of interest and I have no hesitation in recommending anyone to stay here. The young couple who own the site are attentive in the extreme and clearly take great pride in how their location is represented.

We will definitely be back.

The other reviews speak for themselves and the comments are certainly true for all those that have given a 5 star rating. The views from the campsite take your breath away and never fail from stopping you in your tracks each time you look at the mountains surrounding the site.

Sophie and Stephen are exceptionally friendly and helpful and go far beyond any service you would expect. We would certainly recommend this to others.

Our only comment would be around the time of year to visit. It did rain most days we were there although we were told it was not usually so wet at this time of the year. The other thing is that many activities in the area were shut until 9th June at the earliest, with many mid-June which was a bit disappointing for us, however that's our fault and we should have done more research.

We stayed here in a tent in July 2011, 2 adults and our 8 year old daughter. We stayed for 5 nights and had booked in advance. If you are looking for a commercial type campsite with pools, bars and entertainment (eg Keycamp, Canvas etc) this is not for you. But if you want peaceful, clean camping with wonderful views this could be just what you need.

Excellent site, probably the best site we have ever stayed at. Very clean and well run, with friendly and helpful owners. New toilet and shower block is excellent. Our daughter thoroughly enjoyed the little playground. There is a basic shop at reception, where bread can be ordered night before for next morning. Free ice is available from machine just outside reception. Free wifi is also available - there is a wireless router mounted on outside of reception building.

Very quiet site, some traffic noise from early morning, but nothing too bad. Great views from just about anywhere on site. All the pitches seem to be a good size, and the site never seems crowded.

There was a mix of nationalities on site: mostly French, Belgian, Dutch. There were a handful of British families also. I think we were the only Irish family though.

Nearby town of St Gervais is just over a mile away - about a 30 minute walk. We took the Tram from St Gervais up the mountain to Nid d'Aigle, and also drove to Chamonix for the day.

We had a great time and hope to return again some day.
