We have stayed at four other Mark Warner Hotels in the past and the Christina is no doubt the worse Mark Warner hotel we have stayed at. The Hotel is the oldest in La Plagne and is in dire need of complete renovation. The carpets and soft furnishings are old and tatty. Our bed had to be completely changed after the first night, after we had an awful nights sleep. We were informed that the bed was broken - but this should have been picked up by the staff prior to our stay. There seemed to be no consistency with the amount of toiletries in each room - some rooms had full compliment of toiletries, whilst others (like ours) had none. The staff are helpful and friendly, as one would expect with a Mark Warner holiday. The ski guiding was excellent - as it has been at every other Mark Warner Hotel we've stayed at. I guess the food is dependant upon the chef at the time of stay and the standard of food was just OK - we have experienced better cuisine at other Mark Warner Hotels. The Hotel is situated over a busy bar (Scotty's) which can be a little noisy at night, although didn't bother us too much - but I spoke to other guests who were kept awake until the early hours by loud music and revellers. I appreciate that this hotel accepts children, and we expected that but we did not expect children to be present at the bar in the evening and sharing dinner in the evenings - there was a table set out for children (with their parents the other end of the dining room!) every evening. The waitresses even cut their food up for them. Mark Warner normally have a children's tea prior to the adults tea and we found this scenario a little uncomfortable. We did not excpect children to be sitting at the bar at 10.30 p.m. in the evenings either. The one positive thing I can say about the hotel is its location - ski in/ski out.

We have stayed at the Terra Nova in La Plagne with Crystal in the past - a cheaper option but in my opinion, far better value in every respect.

I have had to select that we stayed in 2006 as it wouldn't let me say 2000..! Browsing the site I was sorry to hear this hotel is still as bad as it was when we went. Given the number of complaints and shocking service you would think they would have addressed some issues. Fantastic location, especially with kids - no lugging skis and boots etc, but the hotel and staff were the worst we've ever experienced. Loads of gap-year students who don't give a fig whether the rooms are clean as long as they get on the slopes, and the service at dinner was simply awful. The cutlery and crockery were filthy and just don't look under the tables! I guess no worse than leaving your own teenagers in charge of your house and finding it filthy on return... but is that really the standard you want to pay for when booking a holiday?!

We decided to take our children skiing for christmas. We have stayed with Mark Warner before, and therefore, thought this would be as good as the other hotels!!!!
The restaurant was terrible, the food came out late, and with the wrong order, the left hand didn't know what the right was doing.
The rooms were not cleaned properly, bins overflowing, no clean towels etc.
The main problem was that the staff had a sickness bug, the week before our holiday. When we arrived, that week people started going down really ill. Enfact the day we left all you could smell was vomit, from the staircases down to reception, the staff didn't even blink!!!
Not at all happy, not one guest was at all happy, I will never be going there again.

Firstly, I would like to say I am utterly amazed at the negative reviews for this hotel. I have just come back from an absolutely wonderful holiday staying in the Hotel Christina. I have stayed in some absolute dives of ski chalets but this really wasn't one of them. Yes, it was a little shabby round the edges, but the staff and the food made the hotel a really lovely place to stay.

The location of the hotel is excellent. Right on the slopes close to many of the chairlifts/draglifts and gondala - it is a truly, truly ski in/ski out hotel and it was such a relief not to have to lug skis around everywhere.

One comment that I would make is that because the hotel is directly above Scotty's Bar, it can be quite noisy in the evening, so request a back room if you think this would bother you. We thought though that the positves far, far outweighed the negatives and I would have absolutely no hesitation recommending this hotel to friends and family.

The ski resort is nice and easy with great high altitude alpine skiing. The mountains are great and the ski area large, with lots of piste bashing going on, so ideal for family skiing.
The interlinked purpose built villages are soulless and shabby with little to keep the interest in the apres-ski department. There are several bars / restaurants but nothing caught the imagination and unfortunately all a little bland.
The Hotel Christina was shocking. Run (owned?) by Mark Warner, I cannot think of another environment were they would get away with such poor standards. If you weren't 2000m up a mountain in a foreign country, with no alternative, you wouldn't stay 5 minutes.
I have stayed in French alpine hotels before, including several run by Mark Warner, and so I have learnt not to expect too much in the way of luxuriousness, but this was beyond basic and shabby. Tiny rooms with no facilities, tired and scruffy decor, broken fittings, lousy plumbing, dubious smells are just some of the delights to await you. This lack of standards is not down to the staff, however. The place needs a major refurbishment & redesign in order to make the place even reasonable.
To my mind, the basic standard anyone should expect these days, even with a budget hotel, is that of a roadside travel inn. This is unfortunately nowhere near.
We stayed half board and the food was plentiful and always hot and served enthusiastically by the gap year students Mark Warner employs.
However, the menu was overly fussy & pretentious and considerably beyond the abilities of the kitchen. Every one of my dishes arrived totally overcooked. Perhaps if they layed off the faux haute-cuisine and served simpler dishes, they may be able to work within the abilities of their staff, and achieve a far better result overall.
The staff themselves were a mixed bag. Some were consistently nice, cheery and pleasant, whilst others appeared surly, hungover and bored. The childcare team in particular were a credit, creating a fun and friendly impression that the children seemed to enjoy.
Overall, as a premium product, which Mark Warner like to market themselves, this fell woefully short.

  • Liked — The location is on the piste.
  • Disliked — The hotel needs knocking down.

My husband & I spent a week at the Hotel Christina at the beginning of February. We got a very good deal on the cost of the holiday as my husband works for an airline & having seen that the full price would have been nearly £1000 each we thought that we were getting a fantastic bargain. As it was we thought that a stay at the hotel was worth a lot less than the brochure price.

The hotel needs alot of TLC and is looking very sad & in need of refurbishment. There are holes in the ceiling of the bar & the supposedly comfy bar area wasn't what I would call inviting. The door to the balcony in our room had a gap at the top of it and although the bathroom had been renovated and was very nice the rest of the room didn't match it as there was plaster coming off the walls.

The lift in the hotel broke down on the Tuesday after we arrived and wasn't fixed again until the Thursday. This meant that after a days skiing when everyone was extremely tired they had to walk up to their rooms. Ours was on the 4th floor so it was a slog every time we went upstairs.

In the afternoons reception was unmanned & there never seemed to be anyone around to give you your room key. Not a problem except that the security door into the front of the hotel didn't work so anyone could walk into the hotel, take a key from behind reception (everyone got their own keys in the afternoon) and then go to the room and take any valuables. As there are no safes in the rooms it meant that money, passports etc couldn't be put away securely so we were always aware of the risks that someone could take them.

On the positive side, the food was excellent and at dinner there was always a good choice of meals and the wine was kept flowing throughout the evening. As the holiday was booked through Mark Warner Holidays there was also ski hosting offered every day to take people round the different pistes. Only a small number of people made use of this but they all said how good the service was. Carl & G especially seemed to earn alot of points for their excellent hosting services.

The hotel is excellently situated and truly is ski in, ski out. It is right on the main piste in La Plagne and therefore you don't have to walk anywhere. Unfortunately it also has Scottys Bar underneath it and if you have a room above it there can be alot of noise late in to the night.

All in all we felt that our holiday was spoiled by the fact that the hotel was so shabby and were concerned about the security issues there. If we'd paid full price we would have been extremely annoyed as we certainly didn't think that it offered good value for money. We were told that people go there year after year because of the child care facilities offered. This may be fine for people with small children but I think that the premium that you have to pay for this even if you don't have a family is too much for the standard of hotel. We paid alot less and stayed in much better accommodation elsewhere.

  • Liked — The food which was excellent
  • Disliked — Shabby, in need of an update & serious concerns about security
