“Such a shame”
Reviewed March 28, 2013 via mobile

I don't quite know what to say. I have been to BdN many times and it has always been ok. This time it was ok. Just. But good grief someone needs to do something to manage the place better otherwise I fear it will not be around much longer.

It is not pretending to be Le bistro or la reserve but it is a long way short of acceptable. In some respects things work well: my wife had fillet mignon that she tells me was delicious. But I had an as stage pizza and the kids hated their carbonara. All of that was average but....

The service was surly and in some respects deplorable. The first waitress we had was unsmiling and failed to make eye contact at all. She was keener on chatting to her friends who were in the restaurant than on looking after tables. The waiter pretty much threw the bill at us. They have a baby chair but get quite agitated when you need to change the child as we did our 8 month old. At one point the suggested going outside (it was snowing and -2!).

We won't be back this time I am afraid and it saddens me to think what his restaurant should be. Some of the other reviews say that this is ok as the restaurant is cheaper than others and more of a cafe. But I don't believe that. This bills itself as a restaurant not as a fast food bar and can only be judged on that basis. It fails to deliver on anything adequate other than location.

“Do you want to eat with your friends or 30 minutes later?”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

We booked a table for 7pm on a Friday night for 5 people. The waitress was unfriendly and unhelpful. 2 of the party ordered fish, 3 ordered pizza.
The fish arrived within 10 minutes of the order. We waited a few minutes and then decided to eat before the pizzas arrived otherwise the fish would get cold. A bit late as one of the fish dishes only started lukewarm! One dish was poor and minimal, the other was satisfactory.
The pizzas arrived 25 minutes after the fish was served. The pizzas were below average.
This restaurant is best avoided.

“Mediocre food, mediocre service”
Reviewed March 13, 2013

We visited with the kids, service was initially slow and rather offhand. We ordered fondue, Salad was brown and old, bread tired, other food unexciting. The table next to us was served burnt pizza. Prices reasonable, but frankly they can only get away with it because of a decent sign outside and a constant supply of new an unsuspecting victims. Certainly not holding up the grand tradition of French cuisine.

“Let's call it a cafe”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

To be fair to La Boule de Neige, you need to really view it as a cafe rather than a restaurant. It is situated right at the heart of the village near the starting points for ski schools and lifts. It has large both indoor and outdoor areas. The focus is on cafe style food produced at speed for a fair price. Its not gourmet, it's nosh but decent nosh. You can have an omellette, pizza, melted french cheeses on toast on a salad, steak and chips, soup and all sorts of other cafe style food. It's not the best but it's great for lunch on the slopes or a quick dinner with the kids. They work hard and you always know they have noticed you, make you feel welcome if you are a regular and serve food at speed. Think cafe. Think convenience. Think speed. It isn't, and I dont think it would claim to be a posh joint. Not the place for a special night out.

“The Boule de Neige Fan Club”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

OK so the foods not the best in Avoriaz, but neither is it the most expensive (by a long way)! We love the B de N because the service is great and you always get a warm welcome from the staff there. I've been going skiing to Avoriaz with my family for 6-7 years and we always have lunch there. We returned from our 2013 trip today and we ate in the Boule at least once each day, and never had a bad experience. Good central location (important if you have kids in ski school), fast efficient service and a friendly welcome. Not the place for that special night out but great for a reasonably priced quick lunch.
