“Chalet Marie Avoriaz - ski holiday with Ski Total”
Reviewed January 23, 2012

I have just come back from a weeks stay at ‘Platinum’ Chalet Marie. I was part of a group of 13 friends and really looking forward to top class food, luxury toiletries and a really comfortable stay. Chalet Marie is superbly placed on the piste, however what spoilt my stay was the lack of adequate seating, broken boot warmer, broken tap in the kitchen, and for a few days a broken door on the dishwasher. There was no direct access to the bootroom, wafer thin curtains in the bedrooms, cheap watery toiletries, no hooks in bathroom to hang towels etc, no shelf in the shower to put gel/shampoo etc, and a seemingly apathetic attitude from SkiTotal. I didn't appreciate the initial attitude of the resort manager when we first arrived when I pointed out that we didn’t have enough seats for our group. After a day of skiing you don't want to come back to 10 people having comfortable seats but a rotation of 3 people having to sit on a tiled floor or wooden dinning seats. The manager got quite frosty telling me they hoped extra seats would arrive - they didn't!

On one occasion a timer was put onto the bootwarmer - it melted. The potential for a fire was real and the chalet was not fitted with a smoke alarm; it was one our group that noticed the smoke!

The food was of an adequate standard but not at all what the website would have you believe. The breakfasts were akin to those experienced in 2 Star hotel; frozen croissants, poor quality cereals and bread, UHT milk and a shabby old plastic coffee machine. We were introduced to a Tarte Tartin one night (my fave dessert ever) sadly it was cooked using unpeeled eating apples, odd looking pastry and the apples not cooked in caramel. I asked the cook if that was the way he would normally cook it, he then told me that he is given the recipes by SkiTotal and has to follow them. Similarly the staff are given no latitude about really trivial matters such as how to cut up the bread! My opinion is that SkiTotal are cutting corners, but far too much, leaving you disappointed and rather unfulfilled!

The positives were 1. Location of the chalet 2.Comfortable mattresses 3. Chalet hosts were good chaps and helpful but sadly were not helped by SkiTotal as a company 4. Avoriaz - is awesome, a truly lovely resort which I would return to.

SkiTotal are offering this as their Platinum chalet – it most certainly is not and for so many things to be wrong at the start of the skiing season is really not a good advert. We would not use this company again and I cannot recommend them. Go to Avoriaz but try and find a better chalet!

Room Tip: Don't pick room next to communal lounge, unless you are a late night person. Ground floor room w...

Chalet Marie now has new sofas for guests' comfort and Ski Total is ensuring that other maintenance matters are dealt with promptly and satisfactorily.
Our Platinum chalets are selected on the basis of our guests' comments and our Managers' reviews and are regarded as our best properties for one or more of the following reasons:location, accommodation standard and extra facilities such as a sauna or hot tub. We do not define them as luxury as such, recognising that the definition of "luxury" is very subjective and relative to guests' previous holiday experiences or personal standards.
We are sorry that in this instance the guest had different expectations from the property and thank them for the feedback.

before looking at the nitty gritty, this is a good chalet and I would happily stay there again. It is not however the "platinum" deal it was advertised as and the holiday company senior mamangers who badged it as such should hang their heads in shame (or start actually visiting their properties).

The location is great with skiing right to and from the door. The decor is as expected and i found the food good. The staff were great but they appeared to be let down by their employers whose penny pinching ways and focus on profit was clearly visible to the customers.

The problems (or at least the ones I noticed) were as follows, in no particular order,

No access to boot room from outside. Multiple skiers had to stand in the doorway to remove their boots one by one before carrying them down two floors to the boot room.

The boot heater wasn't working.

There is no "communal" toilet. If you need to go to the lavvy during dinner and your room is in the basement, its two floors below.

The main tap in the kichen was broken and the chalet hosts had improvised a repair by sticking a knife in the tap. This was broken when we arrived on Sunday and still broken a week later when we left. It had been reported to the resort manager.

The shower in my room was spraying water up over the screen. This was due to the head being blocked with accumulated limescale. To prevent spraying water over the sink and toilet, you had to keep the shower head low, which is awkward if you're a six footer trying to wash your hair.

The toilet was so close to the wall that you had to sit on it at an angle.

The only mirror in the room was in the bathroom however as there was inadequate ventilation, this steamed up and was unusable for doing "lady things" like eyelashes and contact lenses etc.

The bathroom waste bins had a white plastic bin liner in them. Instead of changing the liners, the company had the chalet hosts hand-emptying the liners so they could reuse them. . Only noticed this when we spotted used disposable contact lenses in a supposedly fresh bag! These bins are used to dispose of feminine hygene products and I can't conceive the circumstances in wich the profit margin prevents the fitting of new bin liners!

On arrival at Geneva Airport we were directed to a coach on which we sat for over an hour before we were told that we were waiting for another flight. A brief few words and the directions to the airport coffee bar would have been a better approach. We actually sat on a stationary coach for longer than we sat on the plane which brought us to Geneva.

We all understand that companies must make money, but the company in this case seem to have put their margins ahead of their customers.

Had we paid peanuts, we would have expected commensurate accomodation. Sadly this was billed as top of the range and simply didn't deliver. Make it cheaper and don't dress it up to be something it isn't and this will be a good chalet. It's location and staff will see to that with proper backing from their employers.

Room Tip: One floor down from entrance. It's not too far for the lavvy, but far enough away from the livin...
