I have just come back from a weeks stay at ‘Platinum’ Chalet Marie. I was part of a group of 13 friends and really looking forward to top class food, luxury toiletries and a really comfortable stay. Chalet Marie is superbly placed on the piste, however what spoilt my stay was the lack of adequate seating, broken boot warmer, broken tap in the kitchen, and for a few days a broken door on the dishwasher. There was no direct access to the bootroom, wafer thin curtains in the bedrooms, cheap watery toiletries, no hooks in bathroom to hang towels etc, no shelf in the shower to put gel/shampoo etc, and a seemingly apathetic attitude from SkiTotal. I didn't appreciate the initial attitude of the resort manager when we first arrived when I pointed out that we didn’t have enough seats for our group. After a day of skiing you don't want to come back to 10 people having comfortable seats but a rotation of 3 people having to sit on a tiled floor or wooden dinning seats. The manager got quite frosty telling me they hoped extra seats would arrive - they didn't!
On one occasion a timer was put onto the bootwarmer - it melted. The potential for a fire was real and the chalet was not fitted with a smoke alarm; it was one our group that noticed the smoke!
The food was of an adequate standard but not at all what the website would have you believe. The breakfasts were akin to those experienced in 2 Star hotel; frozen croissants, poor quality cereals and bread, UHT milk and a shabby old plastic coffee machine. We were introduced to a Tarte Tartin one night (my fave dessert ever) sadly it was cooked using unpeeled eating apples, odd looking pastry and the apples not cooked in caramel. I asked the cook if that was the way he would normally cook it, he then told me that he is given the recipes by SkiTotal and has to follow them. Similarly the staff are given no latitude about really trivial matters such as how to cut up the bread! My opinion is that SkiTotal are cutting corners, but far too much, leaving you disappointed and rather unfulfilled!
The positives were 1. Location of the chalet 2.Comfortable mattresses 3. Chalet hosts were good chaps and helpful but sadly were not helped by SkiTotal as a company 4. Avoriaz - is awesome, a truly lovely resort which I would return to.
SkiTotal are offering this as their Platinum chalet – it most certainly is not and for so many things to be wrong at the start of the skiing season is really not a good advert. We would not use this company again and I cannot recommend them. Go to Avoriaz but try and find a better chalet!
