“A delightful cathedral”

Saint-Omer Cathedral
Reviewed April 15, 2013

If you're in St Omer have a look. Some slightly creepy bits like the collection of childrens' shoes but it's a pleasant building.

Not a huge Cathedral, the charm of St.Omer is its accessability. It has been restored beautifully and one gets the impression that the work has been done with both love and respect for the subject matter.

The Cathederal was so well kept, warm, full of lit candles and sunshine flooded the stained glass window. I can't remember seeing a larger, better kept organ. I would love to attend a service or a concert there.

Like so many cathedrals and churches in northern France, St Omer is inhospitable but darkly magnificent. It confirmed to me again how fortunate we are with our churches and cathedrals in the UK - but then that's the result of historical serendipity! I understand that St Omer Cathedral is now being cleaned and repaired.

An unusually warm temperature and atmosphere was felt when we entered this rather austere looking building from the outside. The cathedral offers a typical layout but is bright and offers some interesting insights into the history of St Omer, but a reasonable knowledge of French helps that understanding.
