“A thoroughly enjoyable visit”
Reviewed September 24, 2013

We stayed 6 nights with Valerie, Gilbert & Alexandre, just like staying with friends, in their beautifully restored old farmhouse in the centre of the lovely Bastide village. We were in the mezzanine room with good views .Everything in our room had been well thought out & also a photo album of the creation of our room was very interesting. It was a bonus for us that they both spoke English as we learnt so much about the area & customs - our school french would not have coped! Their hospitality was excellent with good breakfasts & an excellent evening meal which we enjoyed with our hosts & the 2 other French guests. We appreciated all the help they gave us for sightseeing in this area with routes in English & a good map & booking our other evening meals in each one of the 3 restaurants in the village. Thanks to Gilbert, we particularly enjoyed watching Pelote being played in the building next door, apparently the oldest court in the world.,

We stayed two nights last week with Valery and Gilbert in their very attractive village house. The rooms, service and meals were all excellent and can be thoroughly recommended. We were also given very useful advice on scenic tours and what to see in the region, including detailed notes and the loan of appropriate maps. We would certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: All the rooms look very comfortable. Although ours was near the front of the house, it was not espec...

My family's stay at Maison Marchand was the highlight of our July vacation to the Basque Country. From the second we arrived, we were treated like family by Valerie and Gilbert. We occupied two rooms, both of which were absolutely charming and comfortable... and air-conditioned. A bonus for my family was Valerie and Gilbert's fluency in both French and English. As we settled in, we enjoyed a cup of tea from the complimentary tray before enjoying a welcome drink and a fabulous dinner of duck confit. Dinners are offered on Monday and Thursday evenings and they are definitely not to be missed. Valerie and Gilbert are superb dinner hosts and Gilbert's wine selection is top notch. The village of La Bastide Clairence is like a picture-postcard of quaint white and red Basque houses and shops lining the drive. Every day starts with a fabulous, leisurely breakfast presented by Valerie on the covered porch... fresh baguettes, hams, cheeses, fruits, yogurts, cereals, jams and more! Before venturing out in the morning, Gilbert enthusiastically gives updates and advice on the weather, the sights and what-to-do, along with maps showing the routes, as good as a seasoned tour guide. Our stay leaves us with warm memories and we will definitely visit again.

Hello to the three of you, your comments are much appreciated, as are those from everyone who has written about us. Thanks to you and all the interesting discussions over dinner and breakfast, we "travelled" to the Bahamas without leaving our home - that is one of the most enriching things about opening one's home to travellers from all over the world. Perhaps our sons could tackle the fathers at a game of pelote basque or real tennis next time . . !

La Bastide Clairence is a lovely village, and Maison Marchand makes it a "must go". Yes, it is worth the detour. Valerie, Gilbert and Alex will welcome you like a family member and will go the extra mile for you - always with a smile; the home is a delight, the rooms are comfortable, quiet and tastefully decorated. Breakfast is good beyond expectations, and oh! Dinner at their Table d'hôtes is an experience not to miss.
Do yourself a favor! Go and stay there...

It was a pleasure to have you both in our home, we enjoyed the conversation around the dinner table and we admired very much your tenacity with the bike-riding - the Pays Basque is a test for anyone in that respect! Wishing you both well, Valerie, Gilbert and Alexandre

Hospitality doesn't come better than this! La Maison Marchand is located in a beautifully quaint artisan village which needs a good few days to explore properly and the day trip opportunities are endless. Val, Gilbert and their son Alex are wonderful hosts. Their gorgeous daily breakfast far exceeds what you would expect - warmed fresh bread and croissants, local jams and cheese and great coffee - the best we had in France! If you are lucky enough to be there on a monday or thursday when they cook dinner you will be in for a real treat. The rooms are very spacious, totally quiet and the beds super comfortable - it really does feel as if you are staying in a old farmhouse with good friends. We can't recommend this more highly and will be back.

Valerie and Gilbert are splendid hosts. The room was spacious, the bed large and comfortable and the room boasted a hospitality tray - a rarity in France. We were fortunate to be staying on a night when dinner was available and thoroughly enjoyed Valerie's delicious meal. Gilbert is enthusiastic about the area and provided maps and welcome guidance on places to visit. Breakfast, served in the open fronted room, was jolly good and we only wish our stay had been longer.

Our host and hostess went beyond helping us feel comfortable and welcome in their home. They helped us with our French, one purpose for going to France. The room was superb, roomy, light and bright as it looked out onto the garden which is well kept but welcoming. A great place to sit and read or just think, especially on the swing. The salon invites one to sit and watch TV or a movie on those nights when looking for something to do. They do have books in various languages which is a plus. We were invited to keep our car in their garage which gives one a sense of safety. Maps were provided and explained for our daily adventure trips and were used extensively. We shared lots of laughs with them and soon felt that we had gained new friends. We atteanded one French dinner, cooked by both Valerie and Gilbert and delicious is too mild an adjective.. We felt that we weren't guests but family friends and are returning next year for another great experience. There is access to WIFI and the only suggestion we would give them is to get the modem necessary to allow guests to connect from their rooms. They are very gracious in sharing their computer but many people travel now with their laptop and use it a lot and it would make it a plus, plus to have personal connection. Otherwise it was one of the best times I have had on my travels and it was due to Valerie and Gilbert whom make that all possible. Visit them and have a great time as I know you will.
