The hotel is attractive - very baroque. We had a lovely room and the breakfast was exceptional. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk into the town centre which was ok - not as pretty as other towns in the area but perfectly fine.
Great place to explore the surrounding areas and very easy to find.
BUT - in the room is a notice to indicate the reception would be occupied until 11pm after which guests need a code to access the hotel.
We returned on the Sunday at 4pm to find the hotel locked at no-one at the reception. Three contact numbers provided on the hotel door to contact someone if reception was closed. One number just rang unanswered and two went straight to voice mail. We phones each number at least 12 times over the course of 4 hours - no answer. Left a a message - no-one contacted us.
We were left - locked out of the hotel with all our stuff inside and no way of getting in.
At about 8:30pm a guest came out and we managed to get in. If that had not happened we would have had to sleep in our car.
Not amused. No apology. No acknowledgement. Nothing. Really not good enough and we cannot recommend this hotel as a result. Which is a pity because it is ok otherwise.

Room Tip: Just don't stay here unless you have a key to get in the front door. Expect to be left in the ev...

We went to Selestat as a town in the middle of the Vosges region, which we otherwise had not heard of. This hotel was a pleasant, attractive, friendly surprise for us and made the beginning of this part of the trip very enjoyable. The town is small, with two old churches, a great museum for bookworms like me and a range of shops for most needs. Cycling, walking and other activities nearby. (Leclerc hypermarket directly opposite hotel. Nice staff and good evening meals for price-quality. Do watch out for pickpockets/car theft in the area, which has nothing to do with this hotel, however.

Hotel Majuscule was recommended to me by a friend who lives in Selestat, and it is the perfect base from which to explore Alsace, including the Wine Route, the Vosges mountains, Colmar, Selestat and Strasbourg.

I was informed that I was on the 3rd floor (that’s the 4th floor to you North Americans) and there was NO lift! But I was helped up with my heavy bag, and the trip was well worth it. The room was HUGE, and the bathroom even larger. There was a view from my room to Chateau du Haut-Koenigsbourg, the second most visited castle in France (after Versailles).

The hotel is fabulously decorated, is perfectly spotless, and is very economical. There is a large supermarket across the street to stock up on picnic lunch goodies (and, of course, numerous boulangeries), but save your breakfast and dinner appetites for the hotel. Both are plentiful and excellent. My last dinner there (of my 6-night stay) was the local specialty -- salmon with choucroute (Alsatian-style sauerkraut).

The hotel owners are very helpful and eager to please. The hotel has information for tourists to the area and free wireless Internet. Since Selestat is on the main line running from Mulhouse in the south to Strasbourg in the north, trains are plentiful and frequent (there is also a TGV line, but it does not stop between those two cities). It was very convenient to take a train to Colmar for sightseeing, and to Strasbourg for my archive visits, each trip being only about 20 minutes. As well, I rented a car for a couple of days, and was able to pick up the car not far from the walking-distance train station.

Leaving Selestat to go to the Strasbourg Airport was also easy – a train to Strasbourg and then a switch to the Entzheim (Strasbourg Airport) train took a total of 50 minutes end to end. There is also another train that goes from Selestat to Entzheim, but it doesn’t run as often, and is slower.

I look forward to returning to Hotel Majuscule again soon, and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone wanting to explore Alsace.
