Description: A secluded cove on the islands of Bermuda is reportedly where one Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, spent some time hiding out from the Governor Eden of North Carolina around 1718. His ship the Queen Anne’s Revenge may have even anchored off Achilles’ Bay; the crew may have basked on the beach and fished and swam in crystal clear turquoise water. They may also have created a small hut on the shore to shelter from the sun but what stands there today has transformed into the Beach House at Blackbeard's. It serves some of the best food on the island with wine to match in a shabby chic restaurant with a good bar and a special view of the sunset.

Blackbeards at sunset - canonballs on your plate (scallops wrapped in bacon and cooked to perfection) and a glass or three of chilled Sauvignon Blanc - you know you are very near to Heaven. Seriously fantastic location with great food. The new manager Mike made us very welcome when we dined there on Wednesday 21 July and our waitress Lydia, who had only started that day, was lovely. My only slight criticism was that it took quite a lot of effort on my part to attract their attention to order a second bottle of wine - but when it came, it was worth the effort! For the record our party also had Wahoo and Red Snapper, all of which were excellent.

On our recent trip, we visited Fort St. Catherines and went to Blackbeard's for lunch. The wahoo sandwich was dry and flavorless as was the chicken caesar wrap and the appetizer sampler was all heavily fried and greasy foods. Our waitress was never seen again after the initial order and we sat there with empty drink glasses for the balance of our meal. No one was around to get their attention! The view from the deck is pretty but obviously, the new management feels that a great view compensates for poor service and food. Eat before visiting the fort or wait to get back to St. George's.
