We visited Bermuda and the Grotto Bay resort in March of 2004 for our daughter's 1st birthday. The hotel grounds were very nice, and the lobby and main building were wonderful.

The rooms were pretty good, the bathroom was recently redone and very nice, but the rest of the room was in need of a little updating. Nothing majorly wrong, just not really great. The views of the bay/beach were excellent from the room.

The activities/beach were nice, though in March nothing was really in full-swing. We spent most of our time out exploring Bermuda itself.

The best part of our whole stay was the concierge desk. They were extremely helpful for anything we needed, even taking our baby bottles/nipples and getting them cleaned for us. They pointed out good restaurants and places to see, and were just all-around friendly.

My husband and I just returned from Grotto Bay. It was our second visit, first time during peak season. We spent 4 nights there over Labor Day weekend.

What we love best about Grotto Bay:

- Location is great, close to the airport with a bus stop right out front

- Swizzle Inn is within walking distance with great rum swizzles and good food that is not outrageously expensive, like many other restaurants are in Bermuda

- Everyone was friendly at the hotel, and there is a casual atmosphere

- Beach is in a calm bay and easy to swim with no large waves

- Lunch and rum swizzles by the pool were great

- Caves are great, we swam in one to cool off

- There is a dive shop that rents snorkel equipment, dive equipment, small motor boats and kayaks on the property

- There are private entrances to each unit, and most have ocean views

- Landscaping was very nice and buildings are relatively small and spread out with about 20 or so units per building

- Air conditioning in the room worked very well

- There was a small fridge and safe in the room as well

- Hotel is a short bus ride from St. George's, which is pretty and quaint

- You can walk to Tobacco Bay Beach from St. George's and find great snorkeling, bathroom and a snack bar with sandwiches, etc. right there

Things that could be better:

If you plan on eating a hot breakfast every morning you should get a plan that includes at least this meal - breakfast buffet is $18 otherwise and not much variety - omelet station and fresh fruit were great, though.

The bar by the pool closes at 6:30 p.m. - they do make great rum swizzles, though. The bar inside the hotel is open after that, but we did not like the rum swizzles at all.

In general:

We did not eat dinner at either restaurant, as we have our favorites in Bermuda (Swizzle Inn, Carriage House-expensive, Frog & Onion, Blackbeard's Hideaway).

In case you haven't been to Bermuda before, you cannot rent a car there. You can, however, rent a moped. We found this difficult when we visited Bermuda before, since they drive on the left. We bought a 3-day bus pass for $28 per person this time, which worked out just fine to get us everywhere on the island and it even included the ferry service.

Bermuda is an expensive destination, but we have never experienced panhandlers or any feelings of being unsafe, even at night in town. They have a great system at the airport for Immigration and Customs, and it runs very smoothly, unlike other places we have visited in the Caribbean.
Flying time out of Boston was less than 2 hours.

We will definitely be returning to Grotto Bay.

Was not overly keen on the hotel or rooms. They were a bit tired and dark. Ours had a view of the bay but the balcony was too small to sit out there comfortably especially with the air con unit right next to you! Food was okay and the steps were manageable. What I am loathe to share is the secret fabulous snorkelling right off the hotel beach. I have snorkelled on the Great Barrier Reef and this is much better. We saw the most amazing array of fish and big ones too. With that and the underwater caves you could swim in, it makes this hotel one in a million.

We spent the last week of July at the Grotto Bay resort - it's pretty, but that's about all it has going for it. We did not get the all inclusive package because we knew we would be doing a lot of touring and wanted to try different restaurants. The meals we did have at Grotto Bay were o.k. - bland and boring. The front desk staff at Grotto Bay is not particularly friendly or helpful (you feel as if you are imposing when you ask a question.) If you want to feel part of Bermuda, make the acquaintance of one of the bell captains outside, the gift shop hostess or the concierges who gave out tour information. The best part of Grotto Bay was Laurette, a concierge who also moonlighted as a singer in the bar. The rooms are o.k. - the U.S. equivalent would be a 1950's hotel - but they are clean. Would I visit Bermuda again? - no, a week is too long. Would I spend my money to stay again at the Grotto Bay? never. Grotto Bay looks pretty, but it is like a shell - pretty on the outside and no substance inside.

We spent 5 days at Grotto Bay. We had a very nice time as Bermuda is a beautiful country and we just wanted to relax and enjoy it. The hotel was nice and clean and not far from the airport. The beach was small but was never overly crowed when we were there. The food was a bit plan, not bad but nothing to write home about either. I will say that we had an all inclusive package which it the way to go because food is so expensive, and the mixed drinks were great, which helped make up for the plan food. There is not a lot to do at night but enjoy the views but that is what we came there for so we were ok with it. The staff was never mean and was nice enough but I would not consider them friendly. There are really neat caves right on the resort that you can take a swin in and that was a highlight for me. Overall we had a great time on our honeymoon and did not have any complaints as the hotel was nice and provided for our needs but I can not say that they were exceptionally friendly or that anything really stood out that would make it better than another hotel.

Stayed here 1 week - didn't want to leave. Didn't see any "bugs" out of the ordinary. Staff is very friendly. Had all inclusive plan and loved the food, the sightseeing, the drinks - everything. Beach is small, but not overcrowded. Rooms are clean and updated. My wife's a clean freak and she was impressed. Made friends with others who visited and with staff members. Would recomenend this for anyone.
