Great location, helpful staff, but outdated furnishings. Rooms were not cleaned well, dust on fixtures, mold in and around tub and bed dust ruffle, and furniture is stained. Also...ants! They were tiny but they were everywhere. Our bath area had several and they were in the breakfast area as well. The place could be so much more with a little investment in furnishings and cleaning.

Really pleased to read you enjoyed our location and the helpfullness of the staff. Regarding the furnishings, please be advised that we are again in the midst of a major refurbishment of both our rooms as well as our public areas. Your comments regarding housekeeping items have been brought to the attention of our Executive Housekeeper and corrective action has been taken. Please be assured that we have a very reputable pest control company in our employ. Unfortunately, ants are difficult to control and a major pest in Bermuda.
Again, thank you very much for your comments and look forward to hopefully welcome you back to our resort in the near future.

Just got back from the Grotto Bay Resort and we did enjoy it. It was very quiet, almost felt like our own resort as there was hardly anyone there at times. The caves on site are very neat, the staff were all polite, we had fresh sheets and towels and the room cleaned including the bathroom every day. The rooms are an average size and nearly all have at least a peek of the water (ours was mainly viewing the pool but you could see a small bit of the water, although it was called Superior Oceanview) We were nervous after reading some reviews, but the food at the Hibiscus was actually fairly good and we eat all over the planet and are a bit fussy, maybe it depends on the dish or the cook that day. Since there was not a lot of people they didn't have the other bars opened to eat so it was pricier there, so we were glad we didn't get the all inclusive option, so we ate at the Swizzle Inn which was a short walk down the road, and in the town of Hamilton etc while shopping/exploring the island. Many places including the Grotto Bay add their own tip on... so beware of that. It sometimes takes away from some servers incentives but as many cranky people we came across there were just as many friendly polite ones too. We were initially thinking about renting mopeds but once we saw the curvey twisty roads, sometimes with no shoulders on the road, and it being the left side, plus they don't drive 35 miles, more like 60 miles/hr, we decided not too, we took taxis which were more money but faster/more comfortable than buses. Grotto Bay is a bit further from everything, but the island on a whole is small, so doesn't take very long to get anywhere really. A fair bit of steps on the property but was ok for us, it is basically on a side of a hill with a small beach down below. We rented snorkelling stuff one day (friendly guy) and a boat the next (not so friendly guy) and toured around the inner waters which was nice to see. We enjoyed the wild roosters/chickens and cats and the lovely peeping frogs every night. Hot water and pressure were never an issue like some other countries. Other than one noisy rude drunken group of travel agents that stayed over the weekend (here's a tip: book your own vacations!) it was a very pleasant relaxing, quiet trip and the water was just still swimable in November, weather was high 70s. If we ever went back again to Bermuda, we might opt to stay closer to Hamilton but not sure as there is not huge amount to do in Bermuda other than relax/water sports.. lovely spot to see though.

Room Tip: all of the rooms look like they have a pretty good view, ours was about the least, we had a 'sup...

Went to Bermuda as a last minute trip when a hurricane squashed our plans to go to the Caribbean. Didn't know much about Bermuda except it had nice beaches and no hurricane so off we went.

Grotto Bay is nicely located in Bermuda and on a great (albeit small) stretch of white sand beach. Here's the good and the not so good:

Good:
Staff is amazing - always had genuine smiles on their faces and were eager to help. That being said, this is the case everywhere in Bermuda as the locals are very welcoming.
Kid/Family friendly - The hotel and staff were all very accomodating to our 4 yr old son and made it a point to address him at every meal, provided crayons, coloring, etc. He was treated with almost more attention than us the adults, which we were more than happy about...and so was he! :)
Location - Centrally located, close to airport (but don't hear the planes), very nice and clean stretch of white sand beach, and two grotto caves that you can swim in (no other location on the island can boast this claim...pretty cool!). They also have a small gazebo on the water where you are allowed (even encouraged if you have small children) to feed the fish...this was lots of fun for our whole family!! You're also close to the Crystal and Fantasy Caves (a nice visit) and nice nature trails.
Food - We were on the all-inclusive plan, which while a bit expensive, was good. The food, especially dinner was very good for an all-inclusive. I think this is because all-inclusive is an OPTION and not required for all guests. So, their restaurants need to serve food that other non-all inclusive guests would be willing to pay for as well as those who don't have a choice because they've alreasdy paid in advance. The result: the kitchen cooks to please a maximum of guests/palates instead of the lowest common denominator like most all inclusives.
E. Michael - While I already said the staff was great, Mr. E. Michael needs to be called out as he is a gracious host to all guests at the hotel. We met him the first night as he went around to the different tables to greet the guests. After that first night my son considered him a new best friend and searched him out at every dinner. E. Michael was quite acoomodating and even occasionally sat down with us to chit chat and enjoy a meal or dessert. The ultimate was when he mentoioned my son on his morning radio show to say goodbye since he would not be able to see us the day we left. My son was jumping around the room in excitement when E. Michael said his name on the radio and said what fun he had with his new friend :)

The Not-So Good:
Pricey - It's a little expensive (especially when on the all-inclusive) but then again everything in Bermuda is quite expensive. We had lunch away from the hotel only once and spent about $60 for 3 sandwiches and water (no drinks). You might save a little money if you do just the breakfast & dinner plan but then again it may all balance out once you account for drinks.
Guest profile - We went during the off-season so there were no other families with small children. 90% of the otehr guests were clearly retired couples. It would have been nice for there to be more children and for the child activities to be up and running. Then again, the resort cannot control the number of families there during any particular season. If you have kids, it's probably better to go during the summer months (their high, and mroe expensive, season) so they can have more fun and not just play with mom and dad.
Roosters - There are many chickens and roosters roaming the property. Every morning the roosters are out bright and early to greet the day :) Not a horrible nuisance but something to note for light sleepers.

That's it. Overall, a nice relaxing vacation at a great resort. If we go back to Bermuda we would definitely stay here again...we may just have to bite the bullet and pay extra to go during high season when there are more young families to make the stay more enjoyable for our son and when the weather is warmer to more fully appreciate the beach.

We had a very nice stay at Grotto Bay! Our room was very clean, linens were fresh, mattress new, bathroom clean, etc etc, and they cleaned it well every day we were there. The food was for the most part very tasty and most of the wait staff were extremely nice (a few seem to always have a sour look on their face, but the rest were great). The lady that checked us in told us she was ready, then went to answer the phone (when she didn't have to) while we stood there; that was our initial experience when we got there so I was a bit worried. The pool is advertised as heated, and it is not. It does appear clean. There is a small jacuzzi. The fitness center is small with about 4 machines. Our "oceanfront view" was indeed a view of the ocean however obstructed by a bunch of equipment. Would definitely advise that they remove that equipment for a less junked-up look. We did get the all-inclusive package which we enjoyed having. There is only a restaurant or two within walking distance, although the bus service on the island is reliable. We had a decent-sized working refrigerator in our room which was very helpful. The concierge is very energetic and knows everything about everywhere. The service at dinner, although friendly, seemed very slow. A woman kindly played the piano the entire time which I don't like while eating but seems that most people enjoyed it. There are roosters all over the property and all over Bermuda (free-range hens for sure). One person told us he thinks they escaped during Hurricane Fabian in 2003 and remained "free-range" since. There are also 2 very sweet cats on the property. If they just did some updating of the property (has a 70s-80s look in many areas) it would be much improved. Saw a range of people; families, couples, senior citizens, etc.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room...the walls are very thin

Just got back from a wonderful six day holiday spent at the Grotto Bay Resort. It was a terrific spot with great food ,great drink and exceptional staff. Everyone was so friendly and extremely helpful. My husband is a celiac and it was no problem for the chef to make sure he would get the same quality of meals but without the gluten..... Yes the rooms could do with a bit of a make over but they were clean, the beds comfortable and the view was awesome!!!!We will definitely return to this little bit of paradise!

I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful the staff at the Grotto made our Honeymoon. We were treated fantastic by every person we met. Our bartenders for most of the week were Dwayne and Wayne, and my husband couldn't stop talking about how fun they were. They knew exactly who we were by the second day and always said hi to us. Even when they had a different person on with them like Cymone or Nikki, we felt like they never missed a beat.

The waitstaff was absolutely wonderful at every meal we had. Some of the standouts for us were Ben, Raymond, James, Matthew, Cristen, and Victor. By the last couple nights we were actually treated to a "VIP" table on the deck by the beach for our meal. Victor was so fun with his delivery of drinks on a tray on his head. :) The food was to die for, and the atmosphere was perfect. We were given suggestions right from day one on how to best get around the Island, and it was perfect.

The Island itself was absolutely stunning, and I would return in a heartbeat. There was even a waiter who came around on the little private beach asking us if we wanted to have any drinks so we didn't have to get up. We were always made to feel welcome and taken care of. I highly suggest that if you want to have an amazing trip to Bermuda, that you stay here. The all inclusive deal was the best! We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay.

Thank you so much for making our honeymoon a wonderful memory! We will definitely be back at some point (hopefully sooner than later :)), and we will definitely be staying with you again.

Sincerely,

Derek and Megan Hoy
