Duck Inn
Ranked #2 of 3 Ladner B&B and Inns
Reviewed December 28, 2013

We lived in the same community as The Duck Inn for many years, but were never aware of it before now. We spent five nights here over Christmas and hosted Christmas dinner for our two adult children, their spouses and our 4 month old granddaughter.
We stayed in a lovely loft-like cottage on pilings overlooking a reach of the Fraser River. It had literally all of the conveniences of home. Jill and Allen were exceptionally accommodating and made us feel most welcome and went out of their way to make sure that we had all that was needed to prepare a full Christmas dinner for six. If we had not had such a busy social schedule we would have spent more time enjoying the relaxing view and watching the many birds (eagles, ducks, geese, swans, herons) and seals that inhabit the area.
A great assortment of breakfast foods, tea and coffee was a pleasant surprise.
We hope that we will be able to stay again!!

Jill and Allen were away on a well-deserved holiday, but their friend and helper, Cora, looked after us in a way that was beyond excellent. No detail was overlooked, from the welcome on the board to a stocked fridge to chocolates and hot chocolate to a carafe of porte and smoked salmon, smoked by Allen himself - and the best smoked salmon we have ever tasted - to slippers and robes - too many to list. We have never stayed in any place so well-planned and thought through. The property on the Fraser River is beautiful and our place was more than wonderful - cosy and inviting, like being in one's own nice cottage. It was my birthday while we were there and even that was not overlooked - balloons around the white greeting board outside the Water Garden, an extra plate of smoked salmon and even a gift, a beautiful little purple glass heart in a gift box. We enjoyed the album of the evolution of the the two cottages, the larger Willow Cottage and the smaller Water Garden cottage, as well as the evolution of the beautiful gardens. We felt as if we were staying with long-time friends. You can't ask for much more than that.

Room Tip: The Water Garden is the smaller of the two cottages. Willow Cottage is bigger and guests staying th...

Jill and Allen are certainly hosts who really know how to welcome visitors with excellence.
The units are very comfortable and have everything that you would ever want to have. From a welcome port to , fresh produce and chocolates everyone is there for you. The location of the B&B is on the banks of water with a view to mountains in the distance. It is a ace where you can relax and where you can canoe, swim in the hot tub or just watch the world float by.

We stayed for 9 nights. One of the attractions was its proximity to the taswwassen ferry. 10 mins away. All sorts of duck memorabilia is on the walls and every where well done for such an eclectic collection.

Although I had been to Canada a few times before, mainly skiing, I came this time with two friends, a married coupe who had not been before. This was the best reception we could have had, a personal welcome on the notice board and a perfect setting for us.
My friends are keen boaters in the UK and Europe and being near the water is part of life for them.
We could not have been closer. This spot is the perfect getaway.
We had the Willow Cottage unit which is the top floor of a two storey building on stilts over the water. The lower floor is the Water Garden. I think Willow Cottage is a bit bigger with an extra bedroom.
This suited us perfectly as we were a group of three and I had the room with two twin beds, also good for children, wich had its own washroom / toilet in a curtained off area. The shower is in the other bathroom off the main bedroom which is no problem at all.
Yes, the whole of the Duck Inn is quirky but that makes it a wonderful place to stay. It is absolutely full of duck related things and things to look at. Almost anything you could possibly need is supplied (except we could not find a can opener!) and it is warm and comfortable. Fans are provided in each room for warm weather and the beds are wonderfully comfortable.
There is a full kitchen so you can prepare any meals you like and breakfast is supplied ready in the fridge for each morning. We were supplied with bagels, Alan's own excellent smoked salmon, cream cheese, eggs, real local fresh milk, cereals, real ground coffee and everything else you could possibly want. Relishes and ketchup, spices, oil....you name it!
Down at water level is a fully floating room called the Florida room which is set up with all sorts of plants, coloured lights and comfortable chairs and a hot tub which you can use at any time. There is a deck area for guests and a garden area with a barbeque and lots more.
Two canoes are in the water ready for use and life jackets are supplied. We made the most of these and went for a long trip along the river on a perfect day, calm water and sun.
Our hosts were great and gave us all the information we needed.
I am quite sure we will visit again if we make another trip to Canada and I will certainly be advising friends to stay.

Room Tip: Am sure both units are good. Willow cottage has the extra space with one room with a very large doub...

The Duck Inn is so charming and hospitable! No detail is over looked, from the slippers at the door to the robes for the soaking tub! Guests are met with a small carafe of sherry and smoked salmon prepared by the inn's host. The view is stunning and the fireplace is already when you arrive and you literally sleep on a feather bed! If you happen to know the neighbors, the bonfire and party start the minute you arrive!

Room Tip: Garden Suite

We stayed in the Water garden unit for my partner's birthday. We were met with birthday balloons. The soaking tub on the deck was great at night. Trumpeter swans landing in our front yard(the river), sherry, smoked salmon, cute little unit.

Ladner is a cute little town, and the Sunday market was a special bonus. We will be back again to visit the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in another season, to see different birds.
