The view was stunning! To all sides a beautiful view.
Not very big object, nothing a lot to see, but very nice place to visit.

While the temple of Poseidon itself is a beautiful spot to visit, and the view from the top was amazing, I can't recommend it as a half-day trip from Athens.

Rather than take one of the prearranged tours, my wife and I took the bus from Athens. We ended up waiting around for over an hour, as we missed the 2:00 PM bus, and the next one didn't depart until 3:30. The trip took two hours, which was longer than expected. The view of the Adriatic coast from the bus was nice, but the bus was hot.

We had intended to spend some time at the beach below the temple, but we didn't know to get off the bus at the second to last stop -- and taxis willing to take us there from the top of the hill were hard to find (and trying to gouge us). So, we hung out at the cafe right outside the temple entrance, waiting until closer to sunset to enter (as there are no amenities once inside the gate).

There really isn't anything else to see besides the temple of Poseidon, and signage is scarce. There wasn't even a sign to indicate Lord Byron's graffiti (and you cant really see it anyway). So while I was busy photographing, my wife was bored. Right before sunset, throngs of tourists arrived from the various tours, so if you desire photographs, its best to get there at least an hour before sunset.

The park closes at sunset (not necessarily at 8:00 like the hours state), so it's a mad rush to get back to cars and busses once the sun sinks below the horizon. It was very chaotic, as cars were double parked and the busses couldn't navigate around them. The last bus back to Athens (scheduled to leave at 9:00) was a half an hour late, so we didn't get back until after 11:00 PM.

All in all, the whole trip was a bit of a let down; it my opinion it wasn't worth the 8 hours we spent. However, had we left earlier in the morning and were able to spend significant time at the beach, it might have been a nice break from the city. But I can't recommend the temple alone for a half-day trip. Sadly, the payoff just isn't worth the time.

This attraction was very close to where we were staying, so we decided to have a look and I am glad we did! It was beautiful and we stay until the sunset which was really magical.

Unique spot for amazing photos, the temple is beautiful and stand on a Hill overlooking the see. It is in great condition and a great point to have some great shots. It is about one hour drive from Athens, but worth the visit.

We drove our rental car to Cape Sounion on the last day of our 2009 trip to Greece, prior to returning the U.S. Cape Sounion is a pretty easy hour and a half south of Athens by car. There are also numerous charter/tour companies you can get a ride with, but we prefer to do things like this on our own with a rental car.

The main thing we had heard about this location was the sunset in combination with the ruins. We were not disappointed, and I have attached some picture collages to this review.

I don't recall that there was any charge to go near the ruins but if there was, it was nominal.
