Poseidon's temple at sunset is beautiful, especially at sunset! W had planned this as an alternative to the fireworks we would usually have on July 4th.

We booked through Viatour, whose website describes the trip, including a glass of sparkling wine at sunset.
1) THERE IS NO WINE!!!!!! When we and other participants asked we were told that wine has not been part of the tour ever and was not planned, despite the listed inclusions in the advertisement. The tour guide's attempts to divert the discussion away from the non-existent wine should make her a candidate to become a diplomat or White House Press Secretary.
2) While the temple is impressive, especially at sunset, we spent over 2.75 hours getting there starting with 1.25 hours driving in circles in Athens picking folks up at their hotels, just 45 minutes at the temple Including the monuments folks chasing us out of the area just 10 minutes after the sunset, and then 1.5 hours riding home. This is, IMHO, a poor travel time-to-activities time ratio. Tour would be improved if we started earlier and stopped at another historic site/point of interest along the way or for dinner somewhere along the way overlooking the ocean.

This is very easy to get to and is well worth the effort to see the sunset from this perspective. It is a little bit of a climb to get to the site but not too much so.

The Temple of Poseidon is an impressive Greek temple in a location befitting the god of the sea: on a cliff surrounded by water on three sides. The structure is very photogenic, and it is imposing is you approach it from the coast, and the surrounding scenery is beautiful. Coming from Athens, this is a beautiful drive along the coast.

Be aware that these is just one structure to see, and there is no accompanying museum (just one very small gift shop). Those with mobility issues could find it challenging to reach the temple.

The temple of Poseidon at Sounion is a beautiful site with absolutely stunning views, about 70 kilometres from Athens. There is really just one temple there, obviously only the columns are standing, but this does not detract from its beauty. You can get there by catching the bus from Athens, from various stops. One such stop is at Syntagma Square. Another is at Klafthmonos Square, Filellinon street, Makrigianni, or Siggrou Fix. The starting point for the bus is Mavromateon street, Areos Park, Athens. The bus is clearly marked "Sounion". It is a good idea to ask any local and they should point you in the right direction. The trip is about 90 minutes, or may be less, or more, depending on the driver... Allow two hours to be on the safe side. Bus fare is about seven euros one way. Buses depart from 6.30 am to 7.30 pm, every hour. It's a good idea to also ask the driver the times the bus makes the return trip. The entry fee is eight euros, a bit much for the site, but they probably need the cash these days.
