“A lovely and friendly hotel but a couple of areas to be looked at.”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

We initially had booked into another hotel in Flores but 'cut our losses' and left as it wasn't very nice. We found Hotel Casona del Lago online and booked it straight away as it was lovely. The room was very clean and very comfortable (despite not having a mini fridge for keeping drinks cold).

The staff were lovely and very helpful.

Noise - on one of our two nights there was a family next door with what sounded like 50 children because of the noise they were making but this only lasted an hour or so.

Food - breakfast was included (at the usual Central American snail's pace) but different items were charged for. For example: I ordered bacon, eggs and toast but my 'included breakfast' only covered me for the eggs and I had to pay for the rest (as they were listed seperately on the menu) which is a bit tight. Also, my partner ordered Eggs Florentine one morning and they really should look these things up before they put them on the menu as they obviously have no idea what Egs Florentine should be. The next morning he ordered French toast and got connamon toast instead.

On the whole:

hotel and room lovely - restaurant needs work.

This hotel actually lives up to the pictures, the rooms were VERY clean, and VERY spacious. We had a room facing the pool however we could easily look at the lake. There doesn't seem to be a need for a lake view unless you want a private balcony (also very large). The pool was very nice and the free breakfast was delicious, we choose to eat poolside by far the best option. You are not in the center of things, but you don't need to be you are only a short walk to "town" if you want to shop or mingle. Great location for families, couples or the backpacker who wants to splurge and finally enjoy some five star accommodations. If you are going to Tikal, it's no problem as they will pick you up right out front with no issues. Beautiful hotel with exceptional staff!

Room Tip: All rooms are good room!

The hotel is in front of the lake Peten Itza, with a nice view. However, it is also next to a noisy road. Tip: ask for a room which does not face the road.
The rooms are very simple and spacious enough. The bathroom had some flaws in our case: both the shower and the basin drains were partially jammed. What was worse, almost no hot water in the shower.
The dinner was included in our package, so we had the chance of tasting a very salted fish in a chipped plate. By the way, also my cocktail came in a chipped glass. It must be a local tradition..(?)
A positive note was that the wifi was free.
All in all, this was the worst of the 6 hotels that we have tried during our holiday in Guatemala.

It was a nice and clean hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful. Nice swimming pool and jacuzzi helps you to relax after a hard and hot day visiting Tikal.
It is within walking distance of the Island.
The restaurant is nice and breakfast was very good.

I stayed there one night for work. It really is a nice hotel. No luxury but very comfortable. It's located accross Flores Island wich means is far from the noise of the local nightlife. Staff is kind and always looking to make you as comfortable as possible :-)
Nice view of the lake, and great pool and restaurant area.

I spent two nights in Santa Elena on a trip to see Tikal. Overall I enjoyed my time at Casona del Lago greatly. I was more comfortable than I expected and at ease the whole time.

Check in was efficient and easy. I booked my day trip to Tikal upon arrival.

My room was quite large and very basic. The bathroom was very nice. The air-conditioning worked well and the WiFi was super fast. It was hot and II would have liked a fridge in the room. They did leave complementary water in the room for the guests. Breakfast came with my room, yay, and it was adequate.

I love exploring foreign grocery stores so I enjoyed stopping by the one near the hotel. I found the green pepper sauce they use in Guatemala, Tang (passion fruit flavored), and a yummy peach tea that was not over sweetened like it is in the USA.

I had dinner in Flores both evenings. It is such a cute and tiny town. I took a tuk-tuk once, but mostly walked. It's really not far. I tried the white fish because it is the specialty of the lake. The fish came whole, I wasn't expecting that. It was good, but not anything unique.

This hotel caters largely for groups, both foreign and national. If you have the luxury of been able to choose your hotel avoid this one at all cost. Flimsy rooms and cheap plastic finish will remind you of the worst business hotels located in Milton Keynes, moldy bread served at breakfast, noisy and unwelcoming. In contrast the nearby Maya International was excellent.
