Youth Hostel Los Amigos

Los Amigos is a well-run hostel in Flores with an excellent restaurant attached. It's a perfect place for backpackers with a pleasant outside area with hammocks as a location to mix with fellow travellers. You can also book trips to various locations including nearby Tikal for the same price as the tour operators elsewhere on the island. However, we didn't find Los Amigos a quiet place to sleep - there was the tail-end of the nocturnal revellers noisily turning in for the night around 1am or so, and then the early risers for the dawn trip to Tikal noisily waking up around 4am. Overall, Los Amigos is great for travellers looking for a sociable time, but not for those wanting to retreat antisocially to the tranquility of their room.

Do you like hot, stuffy, overcrowded rooms? How about bathrooms so dirty there's nowhere to put your clothes while you shower? Do you like your shower to produce lukewarm instead of glacially cold water? When you sit in a common room, do you like there to be a breeze? Do you like to sit on the couch rather than fall through? If so, why would you go to Los Amigos? My night there was hot, sticky, and uncomfortable. The service was slow and unhappy. There wasn't so much as a fan in the common area, and it was really humid and sticky. The room I rented (paid 80Q to share a room with one other person that turned out to be two) was filthy. I transferred to a hotel, where I paid 60Q for a single room with my own bathroom, and it was clean and bright, and had a ceiling fan. And it was right by the lake, so I could go swimming. About all Los Amigos has going for it is the free wifi, but 3Q an hour at a public terminal isn't much, either.

Quite enjoyable and ecclectic hostel, with many folks coming and going to check out the wonders of Peten. There's always people hanging out at the bar/restaurant in the back (try a veggie sandwich and smoothie), and amongst the various animals running around the foliage, it's a great place to kick back and chat with fellow travellers after a heat-filled day at Tikal. Stayed in the dorm, which was bearable with several fans on high-blast non-stop. The Dutch owner plays movies and documentaries (and WOrld Cup!) on a flat-screen tv, there's an impressive library and game collection. Charging stations for phones/electronics are available in some lockers, the showers and beds are adequate, and the location is in the heart of Flores!

One of the best hostels I have been to - rooms are clean, the vibe is great, the food and smoothies are excellent and the sheer number of people staying there attests to its popularity. It just gets it right for budget travellers.

People here are very kind and helpful. I arrived here early and they accommodated to me nicely to get me in a dorm asap. Everything was great until my restless night of sleep due to being eaten by bed bugs. Killed three as I was in bed early this morning. Then another on my sleeping bag once I was up. Won't be staying here again.

The hostel is probably the most active in terms of backpackers and most are either returning from Tikal, or heading out in the morning. For this reason, the bar closes up around 10pm so that people can get rest without too much racket outside their windows. However, I think its the closest thing you can get to a "party hostel" in Flores. There are always large groups of travelers eating and drinking in the bar, playing cards and other games. Some go out to bars afterwards late into the night.

The location is safe during the day, however its not safe to walk around alone on the streets in Flores at night, no matter where you stay. I met someone who was mugged a few blocks from the hostel when she was stumbling home drunk.

They have dorms and private rooms (for pennies more) with warm showers (not hot, but good enough), as well as hammocks in covered areas for $3 US or so. I think I paid $10 US for the private room with bath. No complaints there, I worked as far as hostels go. It rained a lot so it was quite muggy, but the room had a fan and several beers helped me sleep through the night without waking.

It was easy to set up trips at nearby agencies or from the hostel reception (which is located at the bar in the back.)

I took a day trip to the ruins of Yaxha and another day to Tikal. All in all a great experience and have recommended Los Amigos to other travelers I met.
