“Amazing Place to Stay!”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

This place is absolutely amazing. There are too many good things to say about this place. The owners, Lorena y Bernie, are the best. They treat you family and they will take care of you from start to finish. We visited Aguateca, Yaxha and Tikal. If you can, go to all three of them. All offer an extremely unique experience (one takes a small boat up the river, another a hike through a chasm). I really miss Lorena and Bernie's cooking - fresh baked bread, fresh fruits and top-notch dinners. The reserve sits right on Lake Peten Itza. The water is warm and clear. There is nothing quite like taking a kayak out on the lake around midnight to watch the moon or for an early morning sunset. I really hope to return again in the near future.

Nitun was one of the hotels we splurged on during our trip to Guatemala and in the end, it was definitely worth it! From the beginning stages of planning our two nights and two days of sight-seeing Lorena was incredible with the logistics and with answering my myriad of questions. This was our first stop in the country and her attention to detail gave me confidence and security ahead of our trip. The entire time it felt like we were being taken care of like family. My boyfriend and I are a couple from San Francisco who loves good vegetarian food and we were delighted to find that Lorena, Bernie and her staff appreciated this too. Our meals were incredible, the scenery splendid, the tours they set up for us were with great guides. We ended up going with Bernie to Yaxha on our first day - a trip that offered more wildlife than Tikal. The next day they set us up with a Mayan guide to show us Tikal. They were able to accommodate our early flight the next morning. I would go back and I would bring friends because their grounds would make a great place to have an unforgettable party. Oh and the humming birds were all over the property. A wonderful, magical place.

Room Tip: The Hummingbird Suite!

Well, it is really hard to put down in words how nice was the whole staff with my group. They were always willing to help in any question we had or thing we wanted to do. They took us to Yatcha, Yachilan, Belize and Tical! Everything was fine and perfect! The cooker, a native guy, has blessed hands and prepare scrumptious food every night! One of my friends do not eat meat, so he had special plates prepared for him. This is only a sample of the kind of treatment we were given here. The atmosphere of the hotel is really nice... It is in the middle of nowhere, with an amazing laguna in front of it. You can swim over there, and enjoy the warm waters of the place. Thanks Berni for the amazing experience you provided us. Thanks Arturo, Hugo, Lorena for the amazing service you did!

We stayed 4 nights and had a fantastic experience. The staff was extremely hospitable and professional. The food was always very tasty and fresh, the location, sitting above the lake, was ideal and the room was very charming. The staff meticulously organized day trips to various Mayan ruins which only enhanced our overall experience.

We stayed one night, but in addition took a full-day tour and an overnight tour (Yaxchilan, and Yaxha) with Nitun's Monkey Eco Tours...guided by Bernie Mittelstaedt.

We wanted to stay three nights at Nitun, but it just wasn't feasible with the degree of exploration I wanted to do at Tikal, and Lorena was frank and helpful in guiding our planning around this and around the side-trips...something I appreciated tremendously.

Nitun is a lovely atmosphere. The staff and the hosts are warm and "muy amable." It's a very personable place. The food was delightful, plentiful, and creative.

An example of what makes Nitun stand apart from other lodging options:
Although we stayed a single night, our flight for the next leg of our destination didn't leave until late afternoon. We packed up so the cabanas could be cleaned and changed, yet Lorena directed the staff to provide fresh towels and refill water bottles for US, and after spending the afternoon in the lake we were able to use the rooms again to clean up and dress. Even a 5-star chain hotel would not have accommodated an extended (post-check-out-time) visit so much as that. (We would have had to find a powder room for drying off and changing).

Part of our traveling group is a same-sex couple, and it was wonderful to find a relaxed, warm atmosphere. There was not even a hint of discomfort on the part of anyone. (Though many Latin America nations are light-years ahead of the U.S. in extending equal rights to same-sex couples, there remains an essential conservatism in the broader culture).

Also, my boyfriend LOVED our bed on its stone platform...the first truly good-for-the-back sleep he had on our 2-week trip. If you have back issues, at least one of the cabanas has super-firm, but very comfortable, bedding.

Room Tip: They're all good! The only challenge for some will be the site's hillside location, so for...
