“It is what it is...”
Reviewed April 25, 2012

We stayed at the Thunderbird Hotel for two nights in April. It is what it is: an old motel refitted as retro-west-texas-chic. Still, it is a motel, which means it is located on a busy road that runs through Marfa with an active train track behind and the office and “lounge” located across the road. Clean rooms and comfortable beds. Pool is a bit exposed for my liking. Fairly priced. You CAN walk to the restaurants and Judd Foundation sites (but not to Chinati) still, I might have preferred the Hotel Paisano for its more central location. Also, by the time we reached Marfa after eight days in the Big Bend area, the whole hipster thing seemed really out of place in West Texas (and some of our best firends live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn!). I think Judd would NOT be pleased by all he hath wrought.

A very nice motel, beautiful design, but we checked in very late and got the last room 29, groundfloor no window and next to the very loud ice machine. We couldn't get a change because there was no one at the front desk at 9pm any longer and only trough an emergency line someone turned the ice machine off for the night. We got a reduction for the room and another room only for the second night.

Room Tip: check in early on the phone before you arrive and make sure you don't get room 29

Went to Marfa and the Thunderbird on a driving trip from Houston to San Diego at the recommendation of Houston friends. Our friends had not been, but their reliance on a few rave reviews by the NY Times turned out to be well founded. We were greeted pleasantly in the hotel office after the 9.5 hour drive and offered cold beers. Loved the place from that moment on. Looks like an old school motel with a tiny outdoor pool basically in the parking lot. Rooms are decorated in a retro-hip fashion and have comfy beds, nice towels, and upscale bath products. A basket filled with unique/local treats serves as the mini bar. Coffee, fruit, etc. provided in the lounge in the morning was perfect. Beach cruiser type bikes are also provided, which we used to explore the town and ride to breakfast. All in all, this hotel is friendly, clean, comfortable, and suitably cool for the hipsters visiting Marfa.

We went for a visit during spring break and everyplace in marfa was very busy. We wound up here as we needed two beds. I would describe it as very hipster minimal in style. The room was spotless and the beds and sheets were really great. Nice flatscreen with cable. The floors are concrete and they have animal skins down which is a great look but not as soft and homey as you usually like when you get out of bed. The only other negative I could come up with was that the lights beside the bed are not bright and no good for reading. Otherwise, it was really nice and felt like a treat. They are helpful at the front desk. They have bikes to rent which I highly recommend and the breakfast is AWESOME. I am a health nut and loved that they had true whole grain bread. Good fresh fruit. Rice milk, delicious granola. A welcome change from typical brkfasts. I would definitely go back. Also the pictures on their website are 100% trustworthy and just like they appear!

The Thunderbird has small clean rooms with cool minimalist furnishings, including dimmable lights and a platform bed. The continental breakfast is adequate and the staff welcoming. Set next to railroad tracks and a main road, the hotel's location can be noisy, especially when trains pass through overnight. You can walk or bike anywhere in town, and the hotel has bikes you can borrow At $175 a night, the Thundebird's biggest flaw is price. If you want the cool factor, you'll find it here but be prepared to pay for it.

The Thunderbird Hotel is a remodeled strip motel, it has a very nice outdoor pool, decor of rooms is contemporary minimal. Nice big bathrooms! Very clean! Staff was very friendly and helpful, office is across street but not a big deal to cross road. Breakfast is only served on weekends. Close to train tracks but then so is everything in marfa (they provide earplugs).
A great neat little place!

We had a very pleasant stay for one night before camping in Big Bend. The motel was very simple in a modern sort of way---very trendy with hip design. Overall, the bed was comfortable, the water pressure was AMAZING, the towels were fluffy and gigantic, and the soaps and shampoos even seemed gourmet. Never figured out how to work the heater, so we just turned it off. It stayed plenty warm for a very cold desert night. The hotel served coffee and nice teas along with fruit, yogurt and granola for breakfast.

We really enjoyed the stay, but knocked it down to 4 because WiFi is not available in the rooms (and AT&T phones do not get 3G internet out there), also the TV started getting pretty fuzzy, plus it was pretty expensive for the weekend rate.
