“Cool factor high and so's the price”
Reviewed March 11, 2012

The Thunderbird has small clean rooms with cool minimalist furnishings, including dimmable lights and a platform bed. The continental breakfast is adequate and the staff welcoming. Set next to railroad tracks and a main road, the hotel's location can be noisy, especially when trains pass through overnight. You can walk or bike anywhere in town, and the hotel has bikes you can borrow At $175 a night, the Thundebird's biggest flaw is price. If you want the cool factor, you'll find it here but be prepared to pay for it.

The Thunderbird Hotel is a remodeled strip motel, it has a very nice outdoor pool, decor of rooms is contemporary minimal. Nice big bathrooms! Very clean! Staff was very friendly and helpful, office is across street but not a big deal to cross road. Breakfast is only served on weekends. Close to train tracks but then so is everything in marfa (they provide earplugs).
A great neat little place!

We had a very pleasant stay for one night before camping in Big Bend. The motel was very simple in a modern sort of way---very trendy with hip design. Overall, the bed was comfortable, the water pressure was AMAZING, the towels were fluffy and gigantic, and the soaps and shampoos even seemed gourmet. Never figured out how to work the heater, so we just turned it off. It stayed plenty warm for a very cold desert night. The hotel served coffee and nice teas along with fruit, yogurt and granola for breakfast.

We really enjoyed the stay, but knocked it down to 4 because WiFi is not available in the rooms (and AT&T phones do not get 3G internet out there), also the TV started getting pretty fuzzy, plus it was pretty expensive for the weekend rate.

We took a break from the Texas heat and dipped into the pool. No thought is left undone here: even the pool chairs have an original, handmade flair. Our rooms were squeaky clean and well appointed with the basic necessities. I loved the retro finishes with offers from the front desk of records to play; movies to rent; blue inked postcards and pencils and more.

Stayed at the Thunderbird to complete the Marfa, Texas experience it averaged out this place has its shard lines and edges but its flaws too. Appearance can ve very attractive amenities excellent options beds very inviting! Service can be disappointing too. Staff is slow and not approachable... I stayed at Paisano too and same the lication is good close to restaurants and bars but count the town is not big.

Visually this hotel is very strong!!! The rooms were sleek and modern, the shampoo/conditioner/etc supplied were amazing, along with comfy beds, out of this world water pressure in the showers, stylish/comfy furniture and pool lounges. The attention to detail was very good, and the location is great. I recommend bringing your own bikes!!

On the down side, we ordered a specific package, which was meant to include fresh coffee and baked goods delivered to our door every morning; which didn't happen on the first morning, and after asking resulted in only coffee with no sugar or baked goods on the second morning, the third morning we got coffee and a bar of chocolate with a nice note saying sorry for the delay (which was very much appreciated) but then the fourth morning we got nothing again.

Another downside with the package was the bottle of prosecco included in the package, which actually turned out to be a half bottle size instead of the standard bottle size. Slightly dissapointing when you are not forewarned!!!

So my recommendation would be NOT to get a package but just keep it simple by getting a room. It's a one of a kind hotel, and if u like minimal - you will love it.

Lots of thought went into the vision behind the Thunderbird Hotel. From the raked driveway to the cruiser bikes to the branded amenities, this is an unforgettable place to stay (in an unforgettable town). Positives: the rooms and pool excude "cool." Functionally, everything is there - from great-smelling shampoo to good coffee in the AM to recommended places to eat. There are also unexpected (but totally appropriate) perks like typewriter and record player rentals, and well-chosen shop items that just seem right. Negatives: the "lounge" only served coffee during the week. Would have been nice to have a muffin or a piece of toast, seeing that jelly and oatmeal packets were behind the counter. Not sure if rates are more during the weekend, but it was a little disappointing. Also, the rooms were shrunk a bit to enlarge the bathrooms (at least Room 20). Personally, I'd rather have a larger room, but if you care, then consider the rooms with couches, as I believe they are bigger. All in all, I'd stay here again in a heartbeat - and buy another t-shirt.
