If you are in Marfa, you must tour the Courthouse. Fully restored to its pristine glory and several stories high, its the best view in Marfa. The lightening rods even have their original glass balls.

The courthouse is beautiful building on the outside but somewhat plain on the inside but make your way up three floors and two more flights of stairs up to the tower to get a great view of marfa and surroundings! No reception or info so you have to find your own way but it's very easy to navigate. It's free!!

This is a working courthouse, although almost eerily quiet on the Wednesday afternoon I visited. There is no reception desk but just inside the door facing the main business street is a podium with an article about the restoration done in 2001. Check out the picture of the newly constructed courthouse and jail in 1886 with nothing at all around it.

The elevator is in an alcove near the end of the hallway that leads to the left, or west. The elevator goes to the third floor then there are two flights of curved stairs to the windowed cupola. It is a climb but doable and worth the effort.

Eight sets of arched double windows give a panoramic view of the Marfa Plateau and the mountains which keep it from being miles and miles of nothing but miles and miles. Closer in is the view south down Highland Boulevard to the edge of town and an overview of the Presidio County jails, both old and new.
