Great atmosphere in the patio area of an evening when people are coming back from exploring and preparing to go off and see the marfa lights. Rooms are pretty dated but the hotel has the history of the movies to carry it through. Front desk staff could be more welcoming

You feel like you are back in the old west at the Paisano. We stayed there for two nights on a recent visit to Marfa. The hotel has been completed renovated but without losing any of its original charm. Built in 1930 it housed the actors for the classic movie, "Giant." The hotel is clean and well managed. We heard the restaurant was excellent but didn't have a chance to partake on this visit. There is no breakfast but complimentary coffee, tea and fruit is available in the lobby. There are several small "boutique" restaurants nearby. We will definitely stay here again if we visit Marfa (a little town in the middle of nowhere).

Lovingly restored Trost designed hotel built pre-depression (just). This is a remote place even today, and building a hotel here in the late 20's must have been a real gamble, so its great that you can stay here today, and experience something of what would have been a luxury establishment then. Sure, the (standard) rooms are small, the bathrooms tiny, and the layout means you can see right into someone else's room (sadly not Elizabeth Taylor in my case), but its lovely place to stay one night, not sure about much longer. Everything was clean, linens were just fine, bed way too small (or maybe I'm way too big). Public areas lovely - there's even a fireplace, how Americans love a fireplace. Breakfast is non-existent and overall a problem in Marfa, hey ho. (Eat dinner late instead).
Jetts Grille, the independent restaurant within the hotel is good, and has a cool bar too.
Don't forget to drive a few miles west, and see the Prada store in the high desert. Even cooler.

The El Paisano is clearly past it's prime but it's still where I will stay when I go back to Marfa. In the course of last week (weds-sunday) I spent 2 nights there with my 2 teens. Then we were kicked out for a wedding and spent 1 night at the El Cosmico in a safari tent complete with a bed and electricity - which was totally awesome for the teens but the community outdoor bathroom freaked me out a little - and 1 night at the Hampton Inn one town over. The good thing about the El Paisano is the fun history "Giant" connection, and the central Marfa location. You can walk to dinner and back every night - at the incomparable Maiya's and Cochineal - walk to galleries, walk to coffee at Squeeze Marfa, walk to the awesome food truck Food Shark. So that is key. But the place made the Hampton Inn seem like a palace.

Don't stress about your hotel if you're going to Marfa. I would try to get El Paisano or Thunderbird, bc their both right in town. El Cosmico, I would try to rent an airstream or skip. Then do what we do, move on down to the next town and stay at the Hampton Inn, which had an awesome free breakfast and good wifi. But Marfa is awesome so you won't really care where you stay.

GO TO THIS TOWN. IT IS AWESOME.

The hotel is an oasis in the parched west Texas desert high country. The facility is an interesting and attractive historical building. The natural environs, outside of poor Marfa, are striking. The staff were friendly and helpful, even if not quite up on what all was going on in the surrounding area.

The rooms are small, the bathrooms tiny, but that renders the experience more akin perhaps to what the original visitors felt eighty years ago when they first visited the hotel.

The courtyard is pleasant with a relaxing fountain.

In planning our trip to Big Bend the conundrum was do we splurge and stay at the Gage Hotel in Marathon or El Paisano in Marfa. The coin flip was The Hotel Paisano. On one hand that was a good flip, as we stayed there and I got the need out of my system quickly. On the not so good side we paid well over $200 for about 16 hours in a hotel that needs a major face lift. We arrived at 1pm and the check in time was 4pm (???). We left our phone number with the desk clerk to call if the room would be ready earlier. We were tired and ready for a rest and a drink. The bar was closed, there was no dispenser of water or lemonade in a litle welcome/concierge niche...there was plenty of place for this (go visit the Holland Hotel in Alpine for a great example). People were lounging around the small patio with bottles of water or other liquids... we gathered we'd need to find refreshment somewhere else. 3 hours later we were in our 2nd floor room (no elevators and no bellboys). Tired people after having walked around the for the most part closed downtown area arrived in a very tired room. Bedding decor from the 1980's kitchen and breakfast sitting area in the room (yes it's there) from the 1950s. Smallish bedroom, good bed, flat pillows. There were what we hope were coffee splotches on the door and wall in the bathroom. Go visit the hotel, walk through the little ajoining shops with the overpriced goods...then drive to the Hotel Limpia in Fort Davis, the Holland Hotel in Alpine, or go rent a cute little adobe house in Marathon. Ah yes the train...get used to it as this is confirmation that the movement of much of the goods we consume as still moved across America by train as witnessed by us in Alpine, Marathon, and Marfa.

This hotel was a little pricey for what it was, but it had a great atmosphere. The air conditioner was controlled by a thermostat in the hallway, that I presume was for a set of rooms. It got too hot but thankfully it was a cool night and we opened up the window. The pillows were lacking with any filling.
The lobby has a nice ambiance to it that opens up into a courtyard. Everyone in the evening (or throughout the day) can sit around there. There is a bar on one side of the courtyard that serves in the evenings.
The front clerk was not overly friendly but got the job done.
