We loved The Gage. Marathon is a tiny town about 3 hours from Midland, sitting right outside Big Bend National park - The park is about 30 minutes away. But, after a long day of travel, The Gage was a wonderful surprise.
It is a home of a turn of the century rancher. They've added casitas type rooms to the side set around a courtyard - Mexican style. The entire hotel took you back in time. The room was lovely. Authentic carvings and furniture, Mexican tile, cool and dark...
The pool area was quiet and very pretty. A nice place to sit outside and relax.
A great small bar and restaurant around a courtyard for outdoor dining. With the cool desert nights, it was great.
Recommend staying out in the courtyard rooms - Les Portales - rather than in the hotel. I hear the hotel rooms are loud. Request room on the back side - away from the train tracks. The train flies through Marathon right across from the hotel with whistle blowing. It didn't bother too much, but I hear it is really loud in the hotel rooms. To us, it just added to the charm of the place. We loved The Gage and would have liked another night but we were heading to Lajitas (see review of Lajitas hotel) further down into the park. A wonderful stop while touring the area.
