“Great for a Weekend”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

My wife and I stayed at the Gage Hotel over a Friday and Saturday night. The idea was to get away without kids and do nothing - and the Gage Hotel was the perfect place for that. We stayed in the Los Portales section of the hotel. Upon arrival Friday evening, we sat on our patio with cocktails and enjoyed the 60 degree weather in July. We did more of the same Saturday, trading time between sitting on the patio and sitting at the pool - with one quick trip over to the Gage gardens. Our Saturday dinner at the restaurant was exceptional. The bread was great, the appetizers were great, the dinners were great, the desserts were great, and the service was up to par. Living in Dallas, I've been fortunate enough to enjoy many of the nice restaurants that city has to offer - our meal at the Gage Hotel was easily on par with the nicer restaurants in Dallas. If you're looking for a place to get away and just relax, and aren't bothered by the time it takes to travel here, this is a good place to visit.

This perfect small town getaway in West Texas is amazing. We always get a villa off property but they are just the best! If you need to just get away and relax, I've never felt more comfortable than here in Marathon at the Gage!

The food, atmosphere and service are good, but just not as good as we hoped from it's reputation. The bar staff was disappointing. They did not offer assistance and were slow. The waitress was very good and sweet to our kids.

My husband recently spent 10 days riding motorcycles through Texas and had the opportunity to spend one evening in Marathon, TX with the good folks at The Gage Hotel. The hotel didn't have a vacancy, but there was room in The Captain Shepard House. Our room was perfectly appointed with a king sized iron bed and private bathroom. We even had a small private porch. The large, deep front porch was wonderfully comfortable and cool. We enjoyed chatting with another couple spending the evening in the house before heading over to the 12 Gage Restaurant for dinner. Dinner was perfect, drinks were wonderful, our server delightful .... an oasis. We didn't partake in the other offerings available .... pool, massage, spa, etc. We retired to our room and enjoyed each other and the quiet of the evening. Awesome place.

Have been staying at this place for years. We always stay outside in the adobe structures and have held business meetings here before with our company. It is expensive and we expect that. You will have to be mindful of the trains that pass through Marathon as they blow their horns at the grade crossings. However, it seems like they now do not feel compelled to blow them when they are right across the street from the hotel. Sometimes finding a place to have a good breakfast is tough so you might want to pack some provisions. The little fireplaces in the rooms are always nice in the cold or cool evenings. Email works well with the WiFi and your cell phone will also generally always work. The restaurant and bar have always been fine places to visit and just unwind. Great place to just sit out on the front porch of this great old hotel in a rocking chair and watch the sun set. Also, nice place to get up early and have a cup of coffee as you wait for the sun to rise. Can never go wrong at the Gage.

Room Tip: Consider the adobe structures outside as they all have individual showers. Inside the main building...

Stayed here several times in past years. Always pleasant and look forward to returning in the future. Courtyard rooms are easier to access but rooms in main building are also very nice.

Staff is always friendly in a West Texas manner. Rooms are well equipped and very comfortable. Some have kiva fireplaces and private patios. Bar and restaurant are very popular and excellent. Good beds and linens.

I travelled a great distance to visit this area and had read so much about the hotel. I loved it and appreciate the person or people that saved the place. My room didn't have a bathroom, t.v. Or phone and that's just right for my yearning of time travel. The bathroom down the hall was cleaner than most private bathrooms at chains I've stayed in. Great swimming pool, I'd love to return and stay much longer!!! Had a great message at the spa which helped me deal with the toxic people that I was traveling with. Ugh. What a bad way to learn about traveling with the wrong crowd. The hotel , staff, massage and swim made it bearable. I'm coming back... Maybe alone or with loved ones or loved one next time. It's a great area that I would love to explore. I've finally learned my lesson about travel companions. I also notice many Europeans staying there and were happy to experience the Wild West . CAN'T WAIT TO COME BACK

Room Tip: Sorry, didn't have room service but couldn't remove the dots. You can choose a room with a...
