“Gage Hotel--a wonderful experience”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

The Gage Hotel was perfect for our stay. The rooms were attractive and comfortable, the courtyard is beautiful and the staff is there to help in any way possible. This historic hotel is one you should visit if you are in Marathon.

Room Tip: A room in the Los Portales section

We appreciate your kind review of the Gage Hotel! We strive to exceed the expectations of all of our guests and value your positive review.

The Courtyard rooms, AKA – Los Portales are the most requested rooms on the entire property! You should defiantly check out the cottages/homes we have available on our 7 acre garden!

I am pleased to hear your comments regarding the staffing, which are accurately described by you as helpful. They will be encouraged once I tell them of your kind words.
Each and every day, we endeavor to enhance each guest’s experience with warmth and hospitality.

Thank you

Road weary and tired, looking for some comfort and rest, I knew what it felt like to be a solo traveler from decades past. Only my horse was a modern motorcycle, and the modern conveniences of the 21st century were readily available. From walking into the lobby area and checking in, I knew I was in a special place. The desk clerks were friendly and professional, and the lobby was as it may have appeared 100 years ago, a large fire place, old west decor and charm, wooden floors and antique area rugs, mounted animals and old time maps on the walls. Surprisingly, when I walked into my room, the feel continued. My room was wonderful, and comfortable, and I felt very removed from the stress's on my real life. Again, this is still a very modern functional motel, but with such charm and character. The grounds are very nice, with a beautiful pool area, and adjoining bar and restaurant, all the same theme. I enjoyed an excellent meal at the restaurant, a Texan mix of local game and sausage. Across the street, and over the rail road tracks is a wonderful garden to explore. Above all, this is a great starting point to venture into the Big Bend Park. I seriously hope to return here in my travels in the future, where I know there is a place of relaxation and comfort waiting for me after a long day in the saddle.

We stayed at the Gage for two nights at the beginning of a week long tour through west Texas. we had heard wonderful things about this old hotel for many years- virtually in the middle of nowhere ( sorry Marathon – I’m from New York) - and it didn’t disappoint. We stayed in one of the rooms out in the courtyard that, while less historic than a room in the main building, was thoughtfully designed and quiet with a welcoming covered porch. The courtyard itself is a beautiful enclosed garden oasis in the desert. Our one negative comment was that when we arrived on a Saturday afternoon after a long day of travel we were overwhelmed at the hotel by a large extended wedding party that occupied most of the rooms in the courtyard. Children were scampering around and the adults were pretty much settled in as if the place was their own backyard. Even the chairs outside our room were occupied by wedding guests, so we didn’t feel inspired to enjoy the place until after the wedding guests left the next day. This is always a problem in smaller hotels that host weddings, and I can’t really fault the management, but you might want to ask if there is a wedding party booked in before you book your trip. Our enjoyment of the restaurant (excellent) or bar (fun!) was not effected. That said, if you are planning a west Texas wedding, I can’t think of a better place!

Room Tip: Court yard rooms are quiet even with a wedding party all around you!

We appreciate your kind review! We strive to exceed the expectations of all of our guests and value your positive review.

Thank you for being so understanding and adaptable to the situation in which you found yourself in with the wedding guest. Thank you for making that contentious decision to enjoy yourself and allow yourself to have a West Texas Experience! You are right, Los Portales section is not as historic as the original section of the hotel. We did however build them to feel – rustic and have a sense of historical ambiance.

We are the perfect West Texas Wedding Site with numerous venues to choose from!

We look forward to seeing you on your next stay at the Gage Hotel.

Outstanding option to stay near Big Bend National Park, particularly after a week on the road. Very nice accommodations with a true Western feel. Stayed in rooms on the 2nd floor of the main hotel, nicely arranged and functional. *Great* courtyards with pool and restaurant --- wonderful way to spend an afternoon/evening after long drives in the area. Friendly and helpful staff too.

Excellent welcome, very old west, but so classy. In a tiny town. Has a good bar and resturant.

Room was decked out in Western style, very comfy. Neat Courtyard.

Will go again I hope.

Room Tip: Ask for fire place if weather is cold.

We visited the Gage Hotel with a group of 22 members of a Houston car club, which was taking advantage of the wonderful driving roads around Marathon and in the Big Bend National Park. Our group was lodged in the adobe buildings surrounding a center court. Each room and the courtyard are furnished with authentic and in many cases antique items, including indian relics and western memorabelia.

The rooms were very comfortable, and ours had a wood fireplace, which we used each night to supplement the central heating.

We ate our meals as a group in the Gage Hotel's restaurant, which had a varied, high quality menu with some very good wines and top shelf liquor.

This was the pefect place as an HQ for our driving tours and to visit Big Bend, Marfa, Alpine, and to drive the surrounding roads.

Room Tip: Get one of the courtyard rooms with a fireplace. We had #29, which has a small private veranda (but...

The negative reviews regarding over pricing is so unfair when you consider what a unique asset this hotel is. The hotel and restaurant staff were extremely professional and friendly. There are several price levels of hotel rooms to choose from. This quality of hotel any place else would be as high or higher in price. We loved the fireplace in our room. The furnishings throughout the hotel are exquisite.
