“Rainy day in Lufkin, TX”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 26, 2012

We climbed off our bike and the sky opened up. Not wanting to go far to eat we found that there was a restaurant in the motel next door to where we were staying. What a surprise, the food was great and the staff took very good care of us.

“what a surprise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2012

This is such a tacky name and it's stuck in a motel on the highway, however it's a truly nice surprise inside. The service was great and the food was terrific. I had a very fresh salad, fish, potatoes and vegetable. It was all wonderful. The room is a little dark, but it's very comfortable. I would have never gone here if friends hadn't taken me there. It's truly in the strangest location, but it's better than most food in this part of Texas. It's not a chain and there's a talented chef behind all of it.

“Hole in wall???”

Slow as molasses, luke warm dishes, no music and generally a real weird environment. The prices are a joke and the food attempts to be something it's not.

“Best Fresh in East Texas”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 17, 2011

This is an outstanding restaurant for food, service, and atmosphere. The Lufkin-Nacogdoches area is lucky to have such a jewel in our midst. There are few restaurants in the area that are not chain places and because of this and the excellent culinary direction of the chef, Hole In One is the freshest, tastiest food around. The atmosphere is lovely, even romantic, and a wonderful and dramatic change from the usual noisy D-list restaurants that abound in the area.

You would never think that such delicious cuisine could await you inside by merely looking at the restaurant from the exterior. Inside you'll find mostly intimate seating, low lighting, and attentive service.

My friend ordered the shrimp and grits and practically licked the bowl. My shrimp and pasta with veggies was equally tasty. All of the seafood is fresh which is a big plus; you won't find fresh seafood anywhere else in the area. The salads were ample and pleasant and the house vinaigrette delightful. The bread could definitely be improved upon - think 'Olive Garden' or Sam's Club mini-baguettes. (If you live in the Nacog/Lufkin area, you'll know that it is impossible to find freshly baked bread served in any restaurant so it was not really a surprise that Hole In One hasn't solved that puzzle either.)

We skipped dessert because of time constraints but made plans to visit again soon. The added bonus is that everything is so reasonable priced. Dinner for two was $45 including tax and tip.

Be on the safe side and make reservations. It's a small place but the food is without a doubt the best you'll find in East Texas.

A couple of cons: I found the flatscreen tv behind the bar to be a distraction to the overall ambiance, but at least the volume was set to low. This is not a sports bar, so I don't understand the reason for the tv, but there it was nonetheless. Also, there are a handfull of high tables with bar stools which are sooo uncomfortable and so 1980's. No one likes to be 'perched' when they dine, especially in a finer dining establishment. Ask the hostess to reseat you if she steers you in that direction.
