“Fun golf course to play!”
Reviewed December 4, 2012

The Rawls Course, located next to the Texas Tech campus, is a very fun design, and well maintained. Although everything in Lubbock is flat, a lot of dirt was brought in to create mounds and give the course an appearance far different from the surrounding area. The holes can be challenging, but the fairways are fairly generous, so it is difficult to lose too many golf balls. It is a fun golf course to play.

“Premiere golf course on the South Plains”
Reviewed July 23, 2012

It's not flat, it's not easy, and it's not what you would expect in Lubbock, TX. It is one terrific golf course, well-run, well conditioned, and a bargain compared to courses in major metropolitan areas.

It's not a golf course where you can just whack the ball out there and play it. You need to think your way around the course. It's better after you've played it a few times - there are numerous holes where you need to drive the ball on one side of the fairway or the other in order to have a good approach angle. Greens are generally in really good condition.

And if you hate playing out of bunkers... well, good luck with that.

“Best Links Style Course in Texas”
Reviewed March 15, 2007

This course is built to resemble a true Scottish Links style course. It is LONG but fairways are wide open. This is a mid handicapper and up type course, so if you're 20+ just be advised that you won't be setting the world on fire because the greens are brutal for us amateurs. But there are 4 different tees, so all golfers can enjoy. And it is fun to be able to hit away with the wide fairways.

That being said, the layout is brilliant. Many of the holes are purposely set up to take advantage of the prevailing Southwest winds. Particulary number 14(if I remember correctly) which is 499 yard Par 4 from the back tees and 460 from next tees up. There are lots of elevated greens, and 18 is one of the great finishing holes I've played. My advice for 18, lay up short of the water but get as close as you can if you're going for the green, and if you don't have moxy to get home in two, aim well left of 150 yard stake as everything that lands to the right tends to roll toward if not into the water. Trust me.

Definitely worth the stop if you ever have reason to be in or near Lubbock. Cost: around $60 weekend, but can get better rate during week. Very cheap for course of this caliber. Should be played in late spring (less wind and green grass) through to early fall. Winter game still fun and can get great roll on dead grass and greens do well through winter.

Will be even better once the club house is built. The current club house is a temporary building, but the staff is very friendly and helpful.
