I will start out saying that we got a good rate for this hotel on Hotwire. Had I paid "full price", I might be less charitable. My husband and I stayed here two nights while in Lubbock for a wedding. When I checked in, the front desk clerk was nice, although I wouldn't say he was friendly. He did ask if a second floor room was OK as there is no elevator. I was fine with that since we didn't have too much luggage with us. He quickly checked me in and gave me directions to the side door. Other people have mentioned it, but the key cards are temperamental. It took a few times to get the side door to unlock for us, while we were loaded with our bags. The room door lock also gave us issues every time we used them. In fact, the second key (mine) never worked at all.
The room is fairly typical of a Hampton Inn (which is right next door), with similar furnishings and feel. We had two double beds, which was a bit of a disappointment since the clerk said it was a king at check-in. But the beds were comfortable and I slept well, even if I had to sleep alone. There was a small window that overlooked the interior courtyard and a small pool that seemed overrun by 9am with yelling children. (If you want quiet, ask to overlook the parking lot, seriously). The bath had the vanity/sink outside of the shower area, which is convenient for getting ready. Everything in the bath seemed clean so no issues there. We did have a problem figuring out how to turn the shower on, you have to pull the tub filler spout, which would have been much easier if there were instructions. I travel A LOT and I've never seen that before.
We never could connect to the wifi and eventually gave up trying. The doors do have to slam to shut, which meant you hear every coming and going of the people down the hall from you. And our AC never got as cool as we needed. But the cookies at check in are really good. Most of the staff seem nice, and while we heard the breakfast was good, we never got a chance to try it with all the wedding running around we had to do.
This is a decent, mid-price option but if I had to pay the regular rate, I would likely opt for the Hampton instead. Not that there was a single overwhelming issues with the Ashmore, but the issues with the keys, the wifi, AC and the noise from the pool would probably tip me to not returning.
