As someone who not only once worked for the Baymont chain, but was present and in good standing from its founding and rebranding, I was both heartened to see this former Hampton Inn raise the Baymont flag and to see the name still surviving and thriving under the Wyndham group.
That being said... this hotel needs some money put back into it by its owners.
The exterior was in good shape with good presentation; the access is still a touch rough when coming up from the south, but that's not the hotel's fault. The lobby was clean, presentable, but the constant presence of the bell on the front desk at all hours-- an inattentive desk staff-- worried me a little bit. The open, unlocked (and sometimes wide open in the middle of the night) front doors also presented me with an unease about the security of the building.
As an older building, I expected to find some minor maintenance issues throughout. The doors not being self-closing was a concern, but upon asking, I learned that they had just replaced all the rooms doors and had yet to install the self-closing apparati. Fair enough. The room was in good shape; the bathroom, though, needed some serious work. The toilet seat was cracked and peeling, with multiple layers of resurfacing having been broken through, and the no-slip surface in the tub was worn fairly smooth in some places.
Breakfast was another matter. When advertising a hotel breakfast, it's customary to list a bit of what's on there. And a hot breakfast should consist of something a bit more... varied. The breakfast here consisted of tons of carbs-- make-your-own Texas-shaped waffles, pastries, muffins, cereals, biscuits & gravy... but almost zero proteins beyond the milk and the tiny yogurts. Free breakfast is good, don't get me wrong, but when your only healthy or protein-ready options are small, nearly-expired apples and tiny yogurts, you need to rethink your breakfast just a little bit. (Don't just follow a brand's standards, go above and beyond them.)
Overall, this is a very average hotel. It's neither terrible or great. If you're looking for a place to crash out when on the road, for both value and comfort, this is a good, solid option. If you need to be here for more than just sleep? Look elsewhere fast; within five miles, you have -tons- of other options. (Just check TripAdvisor for those other options. :) )
