Owner description: Inspired by his Grand Tour, John Bourchier created Beningbrough; an Italian Palace nestled between York, Harrogate and Leeds. The impressive rooms are a perfect backdrop for the rich collection of portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery, Beningbrough's long term partner. The paintings feature people who have made, and are making, British history and culture and in 2015 (Mar-Oct)include contemporary portraits in a display of Royals: then and now. A working walled garden, grand herbaceous borders, sweeping lawns and a play area for children to let off steam, creates a year round garden. Picture postcard views can be seen from the garden and the parkland offers opportunities to explore riverside walks, ancient trees and hidden wildlife. The hands-on interactive galleries at this award winning property; Making Faces - 18th-Century Style, are perfect for discovering history and portraiture. Sitting for your own virtual digital portrait is a great way to send a lasting memory home or Clarence the Corgi can be your guide on the free family royal trail. A taste of servant life is found in the Victorian laundry and the friendly team bring the stories to life in the house. The walled garden restaurant serves morning coffee, afternoon tea and hot lunches include freshly picked produce. The shop has an extensive home and garden range and second hand books can be found in the library in the hall.

With apple and pear trees galore, beautiful walled gardens with a war garden to see, and an amazing house to look around, Beningbrough Hall is well worth a visit, owned by the National Trust.

We visit the Hall at least once year - we've watched the walled garden being restored over the years. This was exactly the right time to see the apples and pears on the boughs :D There was a lovely display of all the apples they've grown in the garden, complete with labels of the names of the apples, a bit of history and when the apple and pear trees had been planted. As usual, we had a lovely meal in the cafe! Not a cheap day out, but extremely pleasant whatever the weather.

This was the first National Trust property that Theresa and I had visited after becoming members and we were not disappointed. A lovely house with many portraits (including the opportunity to create your own digital portrait!) and a really interesting exhibition focussing on the role of Beningbrough during the war. The staff were unfailingly helpful, informed and gracious.
The slightly inclement weather did nothing to dampen our enjoyment of the grounds and particularly the walled gardens. We had never realised there were so many different brands of apple and pear.
Refreshments were a little pricey but extremely delicious.

We came here a few years ago and decided to pay a return visit. We were in time for a garden tour that lasted about 1 hour and was well worth doing if you have time as in my opinion the gardens here are the most outstanding feature. The walled garden is of particular interest especially the use of fireplaces to heat some of the walls from inside to allow more delicate varieties to be grown. It is incredible to see so many varieties of fruit and veg grown in one place and you are a better person than I if you are not tempted to taste some low hanging fruit although this time we visited some of the fruit was for sale.

The formal gardens and borders were impressive and in good colour if a little past their best. We then had a meal in the excellent cafe and visited the very decent secondhand bookshop.

The house was as impressive as most National Trust houses and there was an interesting exhibition on the use of the Hall during WW2. The top floor also had an exhibition on portraits by the National Portrait gallery which owns this part of the house.

You need a whole day here and this place is child friendly. The gardens are the oustanding feature here in my opinion.

There is a lift in the house for anyone who finds stairs a challenge.

Do not miss the laundry and there is also an interesting potting shed and lots of grape vines.
