Owner description: The Museum of Western Art, formerly the Cowboy Artist of America Museum, is open Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. It is located 65 miles NW of San Antonio just off I-10, and is a short drive from downtown Kerrville. Larger-than-life style western bronzes dot the exterior grounds. There are several galleries inside (allow 90 minutes to go through), showcasing artwork by craftsmen and women who have devoted their artistic career to preserving the legends of the American West. Young children will enjoy the Journey West Children's Gallery, a hands-on interpretive experience of life on a wagon train. A small museum store sells prints and original art done by local artists along with other western memorabilia. An extensive western research library is on site as well. An annual art sale and exhibition is held each fall.

This museum only has art and is not recommended unless you are an art enthusiast. Not a good stop for young children. You pay $7 per person for a tour that only takes 15 to go through.

Thank you for taking time to review your recent visit to the Museum of Western Art. We're sorry you felt disappointed in the museum, but we'd like for others who may read this to know that we plainly call ourselves the Museum of Western Art, so naturally it is primarily art. We do, however, have a number of western artifacts on premises such as full size chuck wagons and stage coach as well as period furniture, an extensive saddle collection and more.

As for children being disappointed, we're wondering if your children did not go into our Journey West Children's Gallery, specifically tailored for the under 12 set. Here they can dress up in period clothes and enter an interactive display area that helps them understand life on a real wagon train. In addition, we have a covered wagon and Indian tepee for them to explore as part of our hands-on exhibit. Kids really love this part of the museum.

Most of our visitors allow at least an hour to go through all the exhibits, and usually they take advantage of our volunteer docent to guide them through and explain what the collection is all about, the architecture of the museum, our extensive research library and more.

Thank you again.

Visited this museum once before a couple of years ago, but most of the artwork was stored away for a fund raising affair. This time everything was in place and my wife and I had a great time walking around and enjoying the art. We had the run of the place. The variety of the artwork is impressive. Paintings galore. Many sculptures. An authentic stagecoach. A collection of weapons and saddles. All that was great, but what I most enjoyed was the kid's room which told the story of a family traveling from St. Louis to Oregon along the Oregon Trail. The interactive displays, the replica wagon, and the many diary entries were very well done. I'm retired military so my wife and I got in for $4 a piece. The museum was a steal at that price. A real treat!

Thank you! How kind of you to take time to review your visit. We're glad this time that everything was on exhibit and you were able to get a much better idea of all we have to offer.

We really appreciate your comments on our Journey's West children's gallery. Through this exhibit, youngsters are able to appreciate what early settlers went through and all the hardships they endured. Plus, they have fun dressing up and climbing into the wagon and teepee.

Since our exhibits do change from time to time, we hope you'll be coming back to see what is new.
Thanks again and kind regards.

This is the place to visit if you are truly into American Western art and artifacts. Best time to visit is on a Friday morning; my wife and I had the place to ourselves. A very knowledgeable docent gave us a guided tour; we asked lots of questions and the docent graciously answered them all. The real treat was the museum librarian, Fred. He went into detail about the library collection which had amazing depth on all topics related to the American West and cowboys in particular. I came to the museum with a particular interest in the history of saddles. The library contained extensive information on saddle design and construction by the Spanish and US military, vaqueros in California and cowboy in Texas. For those with children, there is well developed educational display on traveling west by wagon train.
