Owner description: The Museum of Western Art, formerly the Cowboy Artist of America Museum, is open Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. It is located 65 miles NW of San Antonio just off I-10, and is a short drive from downtown Kerrville. Larger-than-life style western bronzes dot the exterior grounds. There are several galleries inside (allow 90 minutes to go through), showcasing artwork by craftsmen and women who have devoted their artistic career to preserving the legends of the American West. Young children will enjoy the Journey West Children's Gallery, a hands-on interpretive experience of life on a wagon train. A small museum store sells prints and original art done by local artists along with other western memorabilia. An extensive western research library is on site as well. An annual art sale and exhibition is held each fall.

“Outstanding quality and variety”
Reviewed March 17, 2014

We thoroughly enjoyed the sculptures, art and photography, artifacts, and historical furnishings, including stage coaches, saddles, a library, and hall of fame portraits. On this visit, one room was devoted to paintings of native American scenes, another room devoted to work by one artist, and another featured work by a variety....the sculptures displayed down the center of each room created different textures and views to make each room even more interesting. We had difficulty picking out favorites as there were so many. The displays change occasionally, so repeat visits for those in the area would be desirable. Volunteers and staff are available to answer questions. If you have an interest in the west, the development of the country from pioneers to cowboys, or cattle, horses,& buffalo the displays capture them well.

Thank you! How nice of you to write such a nice review of our Museum! You traveled a long way from Georgia, so we're glad you had a taste of the old west while you were here.

Thank you for your words of appreciation on our collection here. We are so fortunate to have the works of so many talented artists contained in such a beautiful venue.

We're just now starting to "branch out" now as spring approaches, and our grounds will be particularly stunning in another month or so. If you ever get back this way, we hope you'll stop in.

All the best for a wonderful spring and summer. Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Andy Simon

“A hidden gem”
Reviewed March 14, 2014

My wife and I both found the museum well worth the hour drive that we made. The host explained the architecture of the building which was a story in itself, but the art work was spectacular for anyone interested in the settlement of the west. Intriguing to us was the story behind one piece of art regarding a stampede that was based on the diary of a rancher on the cattle trail to the rail head. We would recommend this museum to one and all.

Thank you! We really appreciate your kind words following your visit to see us. We're glad you found it worth that one-hour drive!

You're right - the architecture of the museum is something that intrigues so many people. We are very fortunate to benefit from the creative design of O'Neil Ford . So glad you enjoyed our galleries and art and met up with one of our great volunteer docents. Our docents really know how to add to the experience.

We hope if you're back in the Hill Country that you'll stop to see us. Exhibits do change and we'd love to have you. By the way, Calgary is absolutely beautiful too....and the Calgary Stampede is fabulous!

All the best and thanks again,

Andy Simon

Great western art museum in the heart of Kerrville, TX. Good layout--open spaces, artwork tastefully displayed. Good mix of paintings, sculpture and antique gear such as saddles and chuck wagon. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable.

Thank you so much for taking time to write a review of your visit. We're so pleased you made the short trip up from San Antonio.

Very glad you liked our extensive permanent collection of bronzes and arts. We are fortunate indeed to have such amazing talent showcased in our museum.

If you're on Facebook, we invite you to stay in touch with us there. And if you are in the area on April 26, our annual Spring Round-up Exhibition Sale will be held. It's a great way to add a fabulous piece of western art to your collection.

Thanks again and kind regards,

Andy Simon

“Great Museum”
Reviewed March 3, 2014

My wife and I were looking for something to do and I got on my laptop to see what was available in the area. Found this place and was very impressed at what they all had there, amazing Western History. All of the workers are volunteers and they do a great job, my wife and I had a private tour guide, and he really knew his stuff. He pointed out things that we would have never seen. This is a good way to spend a day. We would highly recommend taking in this Museum
