“Very nice little local museum”
Reviewed June 25, 2012

My husband and I are history buffs, and actually I worked as a museum curator for a number of years, so we always try to patronize the local museums. Rather than reviewing this from a museum-professional point of view, I'm going to try to review it from the patron's perspective.

The Jefferson, Texas area is VERY RICH in history, and this museum reflects that in the quality and variety of its artifacts. I think that most people would find SOMETHING of interest in this museum: antique tools, furniture, clothing, toys, transportation, local history, art, etc. I was especially interested in the collection of antique German and French bisque and china dolls, while my husband was drawn to the large collection of firearms and weapons. There are exhibits about spinning/weaving, farm tools, blacksmithing tools, a "room" in a cabin, etc. There is also a research room for local history and genealogical research.

If you are in Jefferson and looking for family activities, I think that visit to the museum would certainly need to be on the list of things to do.

There are a LOT of stairs to climb, so if this is an issue for you, you might call ahead and check with the docent on duty to discuss this.

“Two Museums in One”
Reviewed June 18, 2012

The original Historical Museum is about average. Not much that you wouldn't see in the local antique stores. I did enjoy reading old newspaper articles about the sensational Diamond Bessie murder. But it is the newly added miniature railroad museum that makes the visit worthwhile. The display was created over a 30 year period by a man who paid great attention to detail. At his death, the local museum was able to obtain the display and added a building to house it. Spreading over a layout of about 25' by 10', the trains cross bridges, run through tunnels and pass intricately laid out towns. The docent was knowledgeable and very friendly. This display is worth the price of admission.

“Museum tour”
Reviewed May 15, 2012

The Jefferson museum was very nice! We spent a few hours walking around all three stories of the building and the basement looking at all the artifacts, antiques, and items. There were some really interesting things to look at and read about. Jefferson has a lot of history.
