Loved the pie. Nice atmosphere when you have family with you. Very easy to visit with each other due to the quietness of the cafe. Waiter was nice. Nice assortment of pies.

“If this is the best in Hutto, leave town for food.”
Reviewed July 29, 2012

So my wife and some friends thought we'd try out the "Best food in Hutto" for dinner. Given the relatively high reviews, we had moderately high expectations. The chicken fried steak was very large, but bland, had little seasoning, and even a little chewy. The prime rib was OK, although a bit over cooked. And the fish was expensive, small portion, and also, just OK.

We also tried the fried mushroom's and were equally disappointed. They were way too large and not cooked thoroughly. So it was just a bland batter covered raw mushrooms. Not exactly what we had in mind. Fried Okra? Tasteless. Mac & Cheese? Mediocre, watery. About the only item that was fairly good were the rolls. Well, the staff was also friendly and fairly attentive.

The atmosphere is inviting and has an "old fashioned" appeal to it. At least until the annoying gnats and flies start swarming around. We also thought about trying the pie's that everybody talks about, but after such disappointing food, flying insects, and a bill pushing $70 for 4 people... we couldn't leave fast enough.

Bottom line, the food was unhealthy, expensive, and bland. That's just a bad combination. If I'm going to eat unhealthy, it had better be good! At least the service was better than average.

We have read and will always consider such feed back - We are appreciate that you found our service to be above average. It is an old building with one front door - thus we do everything we can to fight flies in the summer months. Our food is not prepackaged or microwave based. We mix our own breading, and strive to provide quality home cooking,.

“Blink while passing through Hutto, Texas and you might miss a splendid meal!”
Reviewed July 28, 2012

Hutto,Texas is proud of their Hutto Hippo High School football team. There are Hippo statues in or near every establishment and homestead. However, don't let the statues distract you from one of the finest down-home cafe's you will have the pleasure of eating at.

Located in downtown Hutto, there is a seemingly well kept "secret" Cafe, or let me say it use to be a secret. If you can't find it on a map just ask any local person and they will point you in the correct direction. The Texan Cafe was established in Hutto well before the nearby Dell Diamond--where the Round Rock Express, MiLB Team plays.

If you're hungry, the menu itself starts to look good enough to eat! No second rate byproducts at this Cafe--no indeed. Portion sizes are generous, with plenty of choices such as chicken fried steak; chicken fried chicken; hand carven turkey with all the trimmings; mashed potatoes with their skins; a variety of greens--their cucumber salad is delectable, and sweet potato fries.

But wait! There is more! Pies, pies, and more homemade pies. Their turtle pie is delicious. Do you prefer hot cobbler with a side of ice cream? Cobbler is served to you on a personal oval shaped iron skillet (carful, it's hot) with a flaky crust and bubbling caramel sauce drizzled over the top.

Don't miss this family friendly cafe folks. I promise you will not be disappointed.

“Not healthy but oh boy is it good!”
Reviewed July 24, 2012

This is a great place to experience Texas Cuisine. Lots of chicken fried steak, down home cooking etc. I go for the fried green tomatoes and the sweet potato fries. The pies are absolutely amazing too! Obviously I can't eat here often as it's not the healthiest but a couple times a year this place is a great treat! Fun place to take visitors who are new to Texas.

We found your review interesting ... did you note our menu also includes a wide and creative selection of salads. Our Cobb Salad is huge and full of healthy items - our Chicken Ceasar, ChickenTender, Beef and Chicken Taco salads are wonderful hot weather treats. But we do encourage you to reward yourself with our Brandy Apple Pie on a cast iron skillet-

“Yummy home-cooked food”
Reviewed July 22, 2012

This is a quaint little place that serves yummy food and scrumptious pie. We have been here for the last three Sundays and have not had anything that wasn't wonderful. If you go on a Sunday, try to be there before 12 or you could have quite a wait. But, it's worth it!
