It was my wife's birthday and I wanted to "kidnap" her for a surprise weekend trip. The major requirement - a beautiful pool.
There are many great luxury hotels in Houston with lovely pools. I was between the Omni and the Westin in the Galleria area.
It had been a while since at The Westin, and it is by some great restaurants, shopping .. a good place for a wife's b-day. So I called directly to that hotel (not the tool number. I emphasized that I selected The Westin base on their large roof top pool. There was no warning of closed pool.
So, imagine how upset it was to find the pool closed for maintenance and I was told that it would be a long period before it would be opened. SO -- what hotel closes it's pool in May ... why not do it is Nov - March?
I was told I could go to the Westin Oaks - walking through the mall in your swim wear. We walked over and looked and it was full of many young adults, loud music and partying. They were doing nothing wrong. It is just not my idea of relaxing by a pool
Good thing - the evening manager, Miguel Jose, reduced the room 50%. And while I appreciate his gesture ... I would have rather had the pool weekend we had planned.

Room tip: Westin - put "closed pool" on your website and info the toll free agents

Greetings yesyes111,

We certainly appreciate your comments on this recent stay at the Westin Oaks Houston. It is delightful to know your wife's birthday was celebrated on our property but sincerely apologize our current pool updates overshadowed a restful stay. As we transition into the beginning stages of our renovation, the pool is one of the amenities we aimed to modernize.

I am delighted to know our Guest Services Manager Miguel was able to alleviate some of the frustration but hope we have the opportunity to welcome you on another occasion and provide the refreshing spring weekend you expected.

Warm regards,

Daisy M.

I was at the Westin Oaks for a convention. Very poor lighting in rms, AC fan - 2 levels & both high. Rm service is over priced. Conf rooms are extremely cold! I should of looked for another hotel near by!

We have stayed here many times over the years, knowing exactly what we get. We hD booked a corner room but discovered they all have adjoining doors, with the associated noise problem, so we downgraded, but didn't receive the promised refund for the difference. Our bill was further wrong, and the tall guy on reception said it would be sorted, but it wasn't, so now we have the hassle of trying to get it sorted from the UK. He didn't seem interested at all.
When we checked in they tried hard for us to not have housekeeping, for 2 weeks????
We declined. Cleaning standards are slipping. No clean bedding for 2 weeks. Floor vacuumed once, bathroom floor never washed at all. Every time we came back the AC had been switched on and the room was so cold. What don't they understand about leaving the AC off ?
There was also a dog wandering around the corridor.
The lifts should work with keys, as anyone can enter them and wander around the floors.
Slightly disappointing overall

So I’m on a two day business trip and had a little more than an hour of down time for lunch. So I grabbed a salad from the mall and quickly changed and headed over to the pool to enjoy some Texan sun. Much to my surprise, people were repairing a small brown wall on the deck. That meant that guests didn’t get to use the pool or even exit onto the rooftop area. Plead with the conceirge who was not helpful at all. I could go to another Westin hotel nearby (no time for that) or I could eat in the bar (no sun there – just overpriced drinks). Thanks Westin, appreciate you depriving me of my hour of fun and sun. I’ve always stayed at this property because it’s conventiently located and reasonably clean – but I’ll reevaluate that in the future. Business / mall hotels hotel are a dime a dozen in this area – it’s how you make your guests feel that count! #SPGGold

Greetings JWJ1981,

We appreciate you valuable feedback on this recent stay at our property. As an SPG Gold member, it is unfortunate to know our current pool renovation hindered your overall experience. Before we begin our guest room renovation later this year, we wanted to focus on updating our pool. In about a week, we will reopen it and I hope we are awarded the opportunity to welcome you back.

I booked the room through a special from Hotwire. I was pleased with the hotel itself and you really cannot beat the location. There are literally a dozen restaurants all within a 5 minute walk including Cheesecake Factory, Shake Shack, Capital Grille, Ruth Chris and various other upscale chains.

The staff were super friendly and helpful, check in was a breeze. I received a corner room on the 10th floor, which was huge, the bathroom alone was bigger than some hotel rooms I have stayed at. Not bad for $80 a night.

Parking is free if you park in the garage yourself, not too difficult, you just have to drive down one level and there is elevator access directly to your floor from the garage. Valet is available for $35 a night.

Room service was pretty good, took about 25 minutes to get a salad, sandwich and dessert. The food was great considering it was midnight, but the charge was $70, a lot for one person.

The downside are all of the minute charges they nail you with. $10 a day for the wifi. $1.00 a minute to use the 1 computer in the business center. A hotel this size needs more than one computer, this was a major pain for me. $.45 per page to print.

They did accomodate and let me check out at 1:00pm instead of 12:00 which is a plus.

All in all a nice hotel with a great staff but beware of the nickel and dime charges that add up!!

Room tip: location in galleria mall good for shoppers!!
