“Serenity and Service”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

We spent the weekend at this hotel for a wedding. I've stayed in the Houston area many times and didn't realize where this hotel was located. You could easily miss it as it's entrance is part of a well manicured driveway. It's an older hotel with charm and excellent service. The pool looked inviting and the work out facilities can't be beat. The staff is professional and the housekeeping services are some of the best anywhere.

Only stayed one night for business. I had been here before for a meeting and to check out the fantastic gym facilities (into fitness so this is big for me). There is even a boxing studio. Staff is excellent and I will be back and give myself some more time to relax.

You could be forgiven for thinking you weren't in Houston as you drive through the entry gates towards the hotel. Plush greenery on both sides of the road with old established trees all around. A fairly slick operation for valet parking at the entrance or you can elect to self park. I have been to this hotel several times now and find the service consistently good and check in has been no exception; quick, efficient and polite.
Rooms are reasonably large and comfortable, but like the bathrooms they are getting a little dated, though that is not to detract from the whole ambience of the place. This is a top class hotel and it exudes a warm and clubby feel.
There are two outdoor swimming pools; one for the more serious swimmers and a free form pool for just chilling in and around. There is also an indoor pool. The gym is simply the best I have seen in a hotel - huge with lots of equipment and high class facilities.
The hotel restaurant is good too, the food quality is high and the service is very professional. The bar has a great atmosphere and bar staff good fun.
The Hotel is well positioned for the downtown Galleria shopping area and close to roads into the Business District
In summary a very good hotel at the best I have stayed in around the Houston Area

Room Tip: The higher floor rooms (3rd and 4th floors) are much natural light than the lower level rooms due to...

Everytime i visit Houston for business I stay at the Houstonian. I can't speak highly enough of the hotel and the staff that make it what it is. Its a mini oasis in the middle of Houston - close to the Galleria for shopping there is a hotel shuttle which picks up and drops off there. The style of the hotel is traditional and the rooms spacious - a slight catch is the bathrooms are not large but personally thats ok. The gym however is incredible probably the largest and most well appointed i have ever seen. It also opens at 5am so you can go before work. Its alot more than a gym with every concievable activity available. The spa is also good however I have only ever had pedicures there so can't comment on the other treatments. Service is friendly and attentive and the staff make a real effort to make your stay comfortable. A real gem of a hotel.

The Houstonian undoubtedly boasts the best leisure facilities of any city hotel I have ever stayed in. It has three pools (including a 25m pool dedicated to lane swimming), a huge gym, rackets courts, climbing wall, 1-mile jogging track, basketball court and more. The reason for this is that the hotel is actually part of a pretty exclusive country club but hotel guests are free to use all the facilities.

The hotel itself is good but not first rate. Our room was comfortable and nicely decorated but very dark due to being on one of the lower floors and being surrounded by high trees. Also, the bathroom was very small. The layout of the hotel is poor. From the lobby we had to go up a flight of stairs and then down a different flight of stairs to get to our room. The whole complex is a bit of a maze and signage is inadequate - I got lost on more than one occasion, particularly between the hotel and the health club.

Dinner and breakfast were both very good although I was disappointed that breakfast was not a buffet.

Service was generally good but I could not understand why the turn down service came round before 7pm each evening - surely this should happen while guests are at dinner!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on one of the upper levels to get more natural light.

Dear DB_n_JB, Thank you for your comments. I am glad you enjoyed all of the amenities offered to hotel guests at the Club and pools. The hotel, built in 1980, underwent renovations in 2008, adding energy-efficient and enhancement features, including complimentary high-speed wireless Internet in every guest room. Signage is abundant to direct guests to both guest rooms and hotel facilities, such as Trellis and the Club. I am pleased you found the staff to be helpful and friendly. I look forward to seeing you back at The Houstonian soon; we appreciate your continued business.

Without question my favorite hotel in Houston. The Houstonian is a relatively small (only four floors) hotel in a quiet, wooded, upscale residential area near the Galleria section of Houston. It feels more like an upscale country club in a heavily wooded area than a hotel surrounded by one of the busiest parts of Houston. You will totally forget you are in the city. The decor is a combination of an upscale country club and a hunting lodge. Dark woods, stone fireplaces, beautiful polished granite. The guest rooms are just as elegant yet comfortable. The rooms face a wooded courtyard with a small stream. You essentially see nothing but trees. The overall effect is extraordinarily calming and soothing. The service is impeccable. Both valet and self-parking is available. The location is right off I-610, one exit before the Galleria exit. The shops, restaurants, etc of the Galleria area are nearby and are easily reached by a backstreet with little traffic.

My husband and I spent 3 nights over Labor Day weekend. We were on the Concierge Level, which was great. The bed was very comfortable and the twice daily housekeeping/turndown service was excellent. The room was a bit on the small side, as was the bathroom as other reviewers have commented on, but it wasn't a problem.

What was a problem, was the number of unsupervised children being disruptive during our stay. Children would run up and down the halls yelling, the "adult"/garden pool was overwrought with noisy children and even the Concierge Suite was full of children. At one point, during the afternoon hors d'oeuvres, a child, unsupervised by a parent, went up to the veggie tray and proceeded to cough DIRECTLY on all of the food! It was vile. One evening, a group of children had gathered in the hallway right outside our room and were literally yelling and screaming at each other. My husband had to step outside to ask them to keep their voices down. I assumed that at this price point, we would have avoided these sort of experiences, despite the holiday weekend.
