Classic French brasserie food, well prepared, reasonable portions, polished service. Romantic setting - nice lighting, cozy ambience, low noise level. Outdoor seating looked inviting but it was too cold the night we were there. Prices were fair; wine list extensive - all French with some good by the glass offerings. Can think of nothing to fault the place for. Very comfortable, satisfying dining.

Brasserie Max and Julie has always been our favorite spot in Houston. We had dinner at this place last week and was served by Fernando. I must say everything has gone absolutely downhill from there. Everyone is our group was chatting, looking forward to be back and Fernando, smirked and wanted to take away our wine menu without asking. His excuse was since our wine menu was on top of the bread plate and he assumed that we are not interested in ordering wine. In fact, we are ready to celebrate with a bottle of Tattinger champagne, then move onto the scrumptious Faiveley. Afterwards, we just simply continue our meal with water. Our group was ready to stand up and leave and I insisted that Fernando may be new and unaccustomed to the high standard of this restaurant. I was dead wrong! From his yelling and demeaning treatment to the other waiter/waitress and the timing among courses, I must say this establishment surely hire the wrong person. To top it off, Fernando insists that a single souffle will be sufficient for generous sharing among 6 adults...

We came here last Saturday night with a group of 20 people for my brother in law’s birthday. There are Pros and Cons to this restaurant:

PRO – Delicious food, quaint atmosphere, very accommodating and professional wait staff

HUGE CON – When we went to drop off the cake earlier in the day, the manager had promised us that they would set up the room in a way that all 20 people would fit comfortably. When we arrived, the setup was absolutely not how we had agreed upon – chairs were jammed together and there was definitely no way that 20 people (unless they were small children) could fit at the table. Our party arrived on time however they had given away one of the tables to another party. When we approached the manager about this, she was BEYOND rude and so unprofessional. In the restaurant industry, the customer is always right and she behaved so offensively – extremely unacceptable especially from someone who is supposed to be a manager at a restaurant. Needless to say, we were all very upset by her vulgar behavior. Finally as the evening settled, she calmed down and ended up giving the birthday boy a small bottle of champagne

I would come back to Max and Julie’s however definitely not with a party with more than 5 guests, because after this experience, it was made extremely apparent they are not capable of handling.

We went to the Brasserie Max & Julie in the Montrose area for Brunch today. Not only was the meal delicious; it was carefully prepared and excellently presented. Would definitely come back for more.

The food is mostly classic french with highlights being os au moelle (bone marrow), steak tartare, cassoulet, ris de veau. Most of it is executed very well. There is little attempt made at moving to nouvelle cuisine which frankly i think is for the best since it is more often attempted than achieved in any palatable way -- the one item on the menu that I feared and avoided involved lavendar and honey. Desserts were also good, wine list looked good but then we asked for several bottles that they were out of so ended up going with the waitresses suggestion.
