Last time I checked, this place was run by the son of the guy who owns Luling City Market BBQ, which is just inside the West Loop on Richmond. The meat and sides are the same as Luling City and both places are top-notch. Rustic interiors, serving-lines (no table service), with food served on butcher paper are hallmarks of a good Texas BBQ place. In other words, the bulk of their effort goes into the food, not the ambiance. The meat is so tasty and tender that you may not want any sauce - some Texas purists tell me this is the only way BBQ should be eaten - but I like the sauce too. It's not a catsup-based sauce like you may be accustomed to - it's more tangy - but it compliments the meat nicely. Houston BBQ Co is slightly more "upscale" or maybe better to say slightly less "downscale" than Luling City, just because it's newer and in a more suburban location, but the quality is there in both places. Both have small bar areas, with lots of locals (especially Luling) hanging around and chatting up the bar-keep, who always provides friendly and accomodating service. The sausages are not my favorite, but that's just a matter of preference, and the smoked chicken, brisket and ribs are the best I've had anywhere.

Smoked using Post Oak, Kurt Craig's 'que has a great flavor without the indigestion afterwards that you may find elsewhere. Brisket, Ribs, chicken, homemade sausage and ham are good anytime along with the juicy coleslaw and a side of beans. Mustardy flavored sauce is on the table and don't be lookin for plates in this place! Meats are sliced right in front of you and placed onto butcher paper. Don't forget a brownie.
