“Improve the dining experience”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2012

Came here for a business dinner on a Tuesday evening. Brought a client from out of town & I had to actually apologize...It wasn't what I expected after reading so many positive reviews. TTake note that there is a disconnect between the positive reviews written & the actual dining experience. There was no one to greet you but there was a foul odor (maybe dish rags) that you couldn't escape the moment you entered. Someone finally approached us & when we gave our OpenTable reservation, he said he had to go and get someone else & would be back. Odd. We almost walked out. The waiter finally came & was pleasant but rushed. There were only two other small parties there..maybe there's 10 tables total. the place was very empty & dark. The waiter didn't seem to have a good grasp on the menu. But the food turned out to be surprisingly good so there's obviously a good chef here. But hotel management needs to seriously improve the dining experience because it could be better. Turn up the lights, have a greeter, at least two knowledgeable waiters & make sure they're eager to see clients walking in. Travelers need to see that the Houston downtown can be quite lovely and that it has great restaurants.

Had a fabulous dinner at 17 at Alden-Houston! Wow - presentation was superb, food tasted amazing, overall a great experience! Super nice staff and service too. Definitely recommend 17 and then hop across the entry to the hotel bar - Sam's - great drinks!

“Not so good”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2012

We ate breakfast here. No buffet, hostess was gone most of the time. I watched 10 people arrive and wait around looking for a hostess, not sure what to do next. Food quality was average. The restaurant is located just off the lobby of the hotel, and while we ate hotel staffer ran a very noisy vacuum just outside the entrance making conversation difficult, plus we had the smell of the vacuum.

“Food good...excellent service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2012

Bradley was an excellent server. Our food was good, but not "great". For the price, it would have been more beneficial to venture out into the downtown area and explore other places to eat. We would eat there again...but not as a first choice.

“Good food, great service.”

Eating alone, I didn't feel alone. The service at 17 was terrific! The waiter made wonderful wine recommendations, gave me directions to a local theatre, explained the area and made sure I got my desert AFTER I got back from my movie. Top notch service.
