I almost hate reviewing this place because you're going to make it harder to get a seat. You're going to eat here...and like it...and come back. With your friends.
OK, just for a frame of reference. I've eaten at Michelin three stars places. Some of the finest dining in Paris, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney and all over the USA. I have high expectations and am a hard grader. Enough said, now let's discuss Matsu on Eldridge in the West of Houston.
Forget the prissy atmosphere. Give up the dim lighting. Forget elegant, romantic dining. You like quality sushi? Then you gonna like this place...very much. The chefs put an extra effort into their buying. I have eaten sushi all over the world....their tuna is simply amazing. They somehow have a great line on ingredients and that, after all, is the basis of excellent sushi. And it's consistent, not like other hit-and-miss places. Good stuff all the time.
Nothing fancy here, the decor that is spartan. No hostess, just the one waitress and the two (of the three) sushi chefs. You might even miss this place, sitting in the middle of a small shopping center on Eldridge south of I-10. But don't miss it or you'll miss out on some of the best hardcore sushi in Houston.
Forget the few minimalist tables...sit at the sushi bar. Ask the chef what's good - they are a friendly group and easy to strike up a conversation with. In fact, that's exactly the point of this place, getting to know the few people that run it. You might be lucky enough for the chef to try out a new creation on you. You probably will learn a thing or two about sushi. You definitely will enjoy yourself.
Did I mention that two of the chefs own the place and one chef just came from a very well-known local sushi place known for it's avante garde creations? yeah, that one. Matsu has better sushi than that place, honestly. These guys mix very traditional sushi favorites with great original rolls and sushi nigiri creations I've never seen before. There is something here for every sushi lover, from basic to complex.
If you'd like to take a couple friends for some sake and great sushi, talk and chill, hang out with no pretention and no pressure, this is the place.
