We dined here a few nights ago -- and we will be back!!! We shared the Thick Cut Slow Smoked Brisket (20 oz.) and WOW is was wonderful. Tender, flavor filled and cooked perfectly. It came with a nice side of potatoes, beans (unique/amazing) and perfect Corn tortillas. It was a lot of food -- so please plan to share this plate. We still took a bit of the meat home for sandwiches the next day.

The on the rocks margs with Grand Mariner were made well. Out waiter was very friendly and kept us happy without hovering. The owner came an introduced himself to us and inquired about what we enjoyed and was eager to hear suggestions.

Down in Houston for the weekend and my friend who lives there told us about this great new restaurant but I don't think he's ever going back. I was expecting a much younger, hipper crowd but I felt like I was at the early bird in Boca (no offense). First round of drinks took over 20 minutes...for tequila on the rocks...seriously. Service overall was poor, food was average, price was not.

In mid-February 2013 this restaurant opened in the Montrose area of Houston, Texas near downtown. All the P.R. published about it focused on it being a "Mexican" steakhouse, whatever that is, and how expensive it is. For a month or so following the opening securing a dinner reservation was a "privilege" it seemed when you called for one. No more. Based on one and only one [ever] visit the meat is delicious. Alternatively, a number of New York City steak restaurants, after years and years and years of steak dining experiences, are superior to any of the many steak restaurants in Houston, Texas. But for Houston, Texas the highly rated quality of their meat is deserved. But after that it's all downhill. So downhill that if you want to brag to friends about having dined at this expensive "Mexican" steak restaurant in Houston, Texas ya' oughta' hurry because this place ain't no long distance runner. Service "C". Atmosphere "C-". Getting a drink order right a "D" [generous] . This is a beer and wine place. As exclusive or elegant a place to dress up and dine it would seem, it ain't. Customers are attired no differently than one would see at a Texas Bar-B-Que place with two-meat dinners for $12.50. So don't worry about "oh my...what should I wear ?". Atmospheric lighting "D-". As a matter a fact if you have eyes sensitive to bright lights think about having been somewhere that the electricity has failed and the emergency lights come on....that's the "look" of the lighting. In summary at a Mexican restaurant where the place runs out of flour tortillas, and instead serves cold corn tortillas stuck together, and/or ordinary pop-n-dough dinner rolls that's a Saturday night dinner at the house of the horse.

I want to say up front that I am a reasonably experienced consumer of restaurant food in a number of countries. I say this b/c the beef steak that I ate at La Casa del Caballo was the best beef steak I have ever eaten and I want you to believe me.

This is a very new restaurant opened by the owner of a same named restaurant in Saltillo, Mexico. He claims to have great experience in steak restaurants and I believe him. I saw an article in the local paper recently about the restaurant's opening and it mentioned a menu item called Tapa de Lomo. this is over 4 lbs (serves 6). It is the entire top cap portion of the whole ribeye.

I had to try it and some of my friends (4 other guys) felt the same way. We tried it 2 nites ago. We didn't even open the menu except to order the wine. The steak was brought out on a platter where some initial slices were cut at table. Sides consisted of steamed asparagus, delicious boracho beans, grilled zucchini and roasted potatoes. All were delicious but who cared? We were there for the meat and it was incredible. Never have I tasted steak as tender, juicy and with a full beefy flavor. It truly is the best steak I have ever eaten and we ate it all.

Overall, the restaurant looked like a classy place; the service was attentive and cheerful. I finally looked at the menu online after I got home. It looks extensive and some of the items sound like they might be good but I don't think I could order anything other than the Tapa de Lomo when I return.
