“The Icon is as reviewed #1 in Houston!”

We had high expectations for the Icon, the staff and property delivered on every count. The reservationist Sarah was friendly and accommodating. Check in was a breeze. In fact Mary, was so kind as to walk us to a friendly "local" watering hole, the Grumbar. Our room was large with a jaccuzzi. The bathrooms are large and impressive. The decor of the hotel is very striking from the vault door behind the desk to the Art Deco elevator dials.
Great location downtown. Very safe. Lots of restraunts and bars. We reccommend Mia Bella. Great nouveau Italian. Bottomless bloody marys and bellinis on Sunday brunch 8.95.
You usually hear beds were to hard ours a bit soft but that is personal taste.
Train to Reliant stadium for a $1.00 just outside.
When in Houston this is the place to stay.

This hotel is a great weekend stay, the rooms are well designed with a very unique look for a Texas hotel. The staff was very helpful and made sure we had everything we asked for. The location couldn't be better for a downtown location, walking distance to lots of great resturants. Also the bed was extremely comfortable.

  • Liked — The decor of the room
  • Disliked — Probably the window that opens from the bathroom to the bedroom.

When I asked a business associated who lives in Houston where to stay in Downtown he immediately said the Icon Hotel. He had not stayed there himself, but worked downtown and had heard good things about the hotel.

After reading about a dozen or more reviews here (most good, some bad) I decided to give it a try especially since their online rate was comparable to the Courtyard downtown.

I won't belabor details here. I will say that the staff was good (some better than others) but not lets say Four Seasons caliber. But all were friendly and courteous.

The type room I had booked online was not avaialble so the concierge who was working the desk at the time upgraded my room. As with most older buildings (I think this building was an office converted to hotel rooms) the room was smaller than newer hotels. The decor was victorian with a modern flair (if that makes sense). The bathroom had a jacuzzi tub and a large separate glass shower. AND what I liked was the permanent setting on the shower temperature so that you just turn it on and it stays at that temp.

The bar seemed to be popular, if not a tad on the expensive side. One glass of house wine was $15. I decided to dine in the neighborhood and found "Cabos" two blocks away with killer margaritas and a snapper that was outstanding at half the cost of the hotel menu!

The hotel had turn down service which you don't find too often. The rooms clean. A servi bar was included. As noted in another review no bath robes but eh, not a big deal.

Over all - I'd stay there again and recommend it to friends.

We stayed two nights at the Hotel Icon having reserved a room through Priceline at what we thought was a very good rate for a 5* hotel. My wife and I were looking forward to staying at this hotel and were seriously considering making use of some of the luxurious spa facilities mentioned on the hotel web-site. Unfortunately, this hotel fell far short of our expectations. Firstly, the hotel was unable to accomodate our request for a king sized bed despite us requesting this by phone weeks in advance of our arrival.
The room we were given was tiny, there was just enough room to manoever around the double bed. The bathroom was small and only had a shower stall. There was no bath tub so any thoughts of indulging in the "bath butler" service were immediately quashed. The in-room security safe did not work. There were no bath robes provided - I just assumed they would be a standard part of a 5* hotel service but I guess I was wrong.
On the plus side the hotel was nicely decorated, the room was clean (as one would expect in a 5* hotel), the front desk staff were friendly and check in was quick (although as previously mentioned we didn't get the bed we requested). The concierge was very helpful.
Overall, the hotel was OK but I think by reserving through Priceline we got a "Priceline level" room and didn't experience a level of luxury that those who pay full non-discounted room rates might receive. We came away disappointed and will probably stay elsewhere next time we visit Houston..

Just returned from a two night stay at the Icon for a business trip. What a great experience!! The hotel staff is super friendly...Thanks Stephen for the front door service to the law firm!! My room was clean, plenty of extras (soft towels, Molton Brown bath products, chocolates on the pillow)...all the things you expect from a top-notch boutique hotel.

Rooms are spacious, plenty of pillows, bathrooms are large. I enjoyed the soaking tub after a long day.

I would recommend this and I will stay there again when I go back to Houston!

Just back from a business trip to Houston and a quick stay at Icon Hotel. I booked it based on reviews by Condé Nast Traveler Gold List 2008. The price was right, but the hotel service was mediocre at best as was the quality of the room. As a business traveler arriving late, I was very disappointed to find room service stopped at 10pm. It's probably a good spot for a visit to Houston, but not a great business hotel.
