We had rented 2 suites for a wedding weekend. Everything was fairly clean, however the linens on one of the beds smelled like they were not changed prior to us getting into the room. They had some weird smell- like someone else slept on them and they hadn't been washed. Other than that, our stay was pretty pleasant. We did manage to get the security guy to tell us to shut up after the bachelorette party but I guess that should have been expected.

The parking situation is pretty bad. Since it is in downtown there is no public parking and the valet charges 20 bucks a day with an option to get your car out without and get back without paying again.

I stayed here on business the week of June 22nd. I had stayed next door at the Courtyard Marriott the previous week and thought I would give the Residence Inn a try as these are the only Marriott options in downtown Houston.

First, I'll point out that Gold Elite members receive none of the perks or upgraded amentities that they may receive at full service Marriott locations. At the Courtyard, you do not receive free breakfast in its restaurant or even coupons to use (there's no Concierge Lounge at either location). I was told by the hotel desk staff that this was "an evolving process" and currently there no benefits offered to Elite members. At the Residence Inn, a free, hot buffet breakfast is included in the rate. It is very good and topped Concierge Lounge offerings I've seen. The fitness center is very small and essentially matches an identical room in the Courtyard property. Guests have access to either and can get to them via the pool area, which is shared.

The rooms at both are very similar and were adequate for my needs while there on business. The Residence Inn rooms also have a kitchen area (fridge, microwave, etc.), which is another plus over the Courtyard. There is no direct access to underground tunnel system from this property, but I understand you can access it through Macy's across the street (assuming you wanted access during their business hours I would imagine).

If you feel compelled to stay at a Marriott property downtown, the Residence Inn is the better choice. The only thing the Courtyard has over the RI is that it has a restaurant/bar in its lobby. However, RI guests can access this directly from their floor (there are doors to the Courtyard side of the building on every floor except the lobby) and can even charge the costs directly to their rooms.

Checked in and got the room for disabilities, without being asked or told. Bars everywhere, bench in the tub, hand-held shower just aren't my favs. Bathroom smells very musty, like mildew. Across from the Police Station, very noisy at night with sirens, etc. Kept getting woke up. Room wasn't cleaned on my first day there. When I called the person was very rude, "Sir, the hotel is very full and the housekeepers are doing the best they can." Next day when I left at 7:00 a.m. I requested that my room be cleaned early so when I finished my lunch meeting I could take a nap before all my night activities. Guy at front desk very nice, took all the information to have my room cleaned. I even wrote a thank you note with $5 for housekeeping since I asked to be cleaned out of order. When I returned at 2 p.m. my room still wasn't cleaned. I had to get towels and sheets and do everything myself. Had to wash dishes! I don't even do that at home! Third day and still wasn't cleaned. If there had been a room at another hotel close by I would have checked out and moved. Don't think I'll be coming back.

I've just returned from the Houston International Quilt Festival. This hotel is a good location if attending the festival. We had a studio with kitchenette. Room was very clean, well kept up. Dishes, pot and pans stocked in kitchen. Hotel had a free shuttle to the convention center in the morning but hotel said "the shuttle was booked for the evenings and all quilters would have to get a taxi back to hotel". Hotel is approx 4 to 6 blocks from convention center. Easy walk in the morning but after the show a taxi is well needed. Plenty standing by. Hotel restaurant, Humble Cafe, is shared with the Courtyard by Marriott and the weekend of the festival could not handle all the people. Humble Cafe food was good, prices were good. All employees at hotel were friendly. Free breakfast buffet in the morning, waffles, eggs, sausage, potatoes, oatmeal, cold cerals, muffins, fresh fruit. Hotel offers shuttle to IAH airport for a flat $50. one way. Booked Super Shuttle for $23.00 one-way. Hotel offered a list of delivery services for dinner. That's what we did each night. Hotels next door to Macy's and the Houston Police Department.

My wife and I stayed at the Residence Inn Houston Downtown while in town for the weekend to go to an Astros game. The hotel was excellent. Everything was extremely clean. The breakfast was great with a good variety of things to choose from. The pool area overlooks the street from the 3rd floor and since it is open late, provided something to do at night. The hotel staff was very knowledgeable in providing directions to area attractions. If you are planning to take in any of the attractions in the downtown area the hotel is within walking distance or you can catch the Metro rail at the station half a block away. Minute Maid Park is only about 7 or 8 blocks away and the area between the hotel and the stadium seem clean and pretty safe. If you are looking for something to do in the evening the downtown area seems to shut down about 8:00 pm. The hotel bar at the Courtyard next door is open until 10:00 pm though.

The website prepares you for a 'historic hotel' or at least one that pays tribute to the historic nature of the building. Not so with this very generic adaption of Residence Inn (RI). Only a few framed photos and letters in the breakfast room alluded to the historic nature of the building. Once inside you get the full experience of any bland, routine, generic Residence Inn. Location is good for the Metro light rail line or the tunnel system. RI shares common valet parking operation with Courtyard in the same building but not a common entrance! You drop off your car at Courtyard but have to walk out on a narrow public sidewalk about a half block to the RI entrance. Not a pleasant customer experience late at night. Dosen't provide a sense of concern for customer security by the hotel owner. How difficult could it have been to provide a hallway through Courtyard to the RI front desk? The valet fee was a little high at $22 weekdays/ $17 weekends but the service was actually better than that of the disconnected front desk or breakfast bar staff. It wasn't exceptionally noisy in my room but it was an inside room with no view. Normal downtown street noise was evident. Check to be sure you aren't charged $3 for the bottled water if you don't use it.
