I visited the zoo with children under 10yo on a 90+ degree day and we stayed much longer than planned because nobody felt too hot. There are huge trees providing shade over most paths, plus fans and mist sprayers spread throughout the zoo. Medium and large exhibits allowed viewing from many vantage points which made them feel 3-dimensional and ensured viewing of every animal. The zoo includes a petting zoo, shaded playground, carousel, and splash pad with changing rooms. Outside food is allowed and many people bring coolers.

We visited this zoo in June and I have to say it was a bit hot but not was it worth it. I have been to the Phily zoo but I really think this one is a tad larger and better. While here a word to the wise. If ur child likes dinosaurs go ahead and pay the extra 5$ I think it is because the exhibit is worthed. My son does not stop talking about it. He lived the whole experience talking to them. While there so not miss the elephant. I loved them. The giraffes and ostriches actually are very beautiful. The cheetah was a beauty to admire. The monkeys actually take food from your hand. TAKE A BANANA FOR THEM. From the flamingos to the turtles to the bald eagle go have fun. And please stop at the aquarium. It is air conditioned for the kids and very beautiful. I would definitely go back if in town.

We appreciated the shade throughout the zoo exhibits and a few air conditioned as well. It was a good zoo for being in the middle of a city. Really large elephant exhibit. The new male lion was making his presence heard. Parking is not ideal.

You can visit Houston zoo on the first Tuesday of each month, September through May, from noon until closing. June, July, and August do not have free afternoons.

We enjoyed our visit during May :)

First time at the Houston zoo! Surprised at the amount of animals and exhibits. Pretty clean for a zoo and the pathways were easy to walk even with many people. Recommend it highly!
