Day we went was sunny and 70 degrees so it made wandering the zoo delightful. Parking was free and easy to access. A couple of school groups there but they were not distracting. Loved seeing some of the newest members especially the baby giraffe balsa had quite a few laughs at a lioness that was determined to stalk a pigeon like bird. We didn't get there until late morning so in many exhibits the animals were already starting afternoon naps. We went primarily to be out in the great weather and enjoyed the day. Fast type food available onsite. Didn't see any restaurants but there might have been one. Also a pond area you could hang out around just outside the entrance

The zoo is big, but only because it's spread out. There isn't a very good selection of animals, and the food is priced high. Parking was kinda hectic since it was spring break, but don't be afraid to pull into ANY parking garage and walk. I LOVED the idea of letting food stamp and WIC recipients in for free. That worked into my budget perfectly. For more info on that, look on their website. All it requires is proof of eligibility in the programs. The 4d movie was THE BEST PART of the zoo to me. WORD TO THE WISE:: PACK A COOLER!! You will save a lot of money, and they are allowed in the zoo. The zoo is also attached to a beautiful park.

Houston zoo is excellent value for money; only 14 dollars for an adult ticket. There is so much to see here and lovely places to stop and relax, you could stay all day.
If you're not driving here, take the metro, under 2 dollars one way and very easy.
Food and drinks are naturally expensive, but you could bring a picnic with you; there are lots of picnic areas around the zoo.
There is free WiFi which is great.
Kids petting zoo was a hit.
Do consider if the Houston Pass is an option for you, it can be bought and is accepted here.
The animals look really well cared for and in top condition.
