We have gone for years but never get there early enough to see the Elephant's getting bathed. They do this at 10 AM, it was really fun for the kids to go up the barn windows, speak with the keeper and be just a mere few feet away from the elephants. They really enjoyed this. Recommend an early morning arrival to make it to this, added bonus, we had no trouble finding parking either.

Only gave 4 stars because it is not in the same league as the Bronx Zoo or the San Diego zoo. Still a great place - the chimpanzee display is especially interesting, and I always love the bird house.

Houston zoo has days that are FREE for all citizens of America.
Additionally, the museums also have free days.

For it's size, it is one of the top rated zoos in the US. When you enter check the posted schedule for the keeper talks. After 4 years of being a member, I'm still learning from them!
The flamingo exhibit has been updated. The sea lion exhibit and seating were updated before that - shows for free a couple times per day.
The elephant exhibit has been enlarged. Last time I was there the two youngest elephants played in the pool for over an hour to my delight and great photo opportunities. The puma/mountain lion exhibit has been updated and enlarged.
Africa exhibits include the opportunity to feed the giraffes - twice daily depending on the weather. Nice places to sit and/or dine while watching the giraffes and rhinos/antelopes.
Turn right when you exit the Africa exhibit along the backside of the lion enclosure to reach the cheetah exhibit shared by the African Wild Dog pups - but not at the same time.
There are many places to cool off including inside while you watch 3D movies. Don't forget the water spouts for the kids to play in and cool off across from the wildlife carosel.
There are discount tickets available for the zoo at Fiesta and any entertainment rack at hotels. The first weekend of each month, both Saturday and Sunday, each Bank of America card allows one person in for free. The second Tuesday of each month is free for all from 2 till closing.
To save even more money, consider packing a lunch and keeping it in a cooler in your vehicle. You are permitted to leave and return the same day; bring food/drinks into the zoo and store those items in available lockers till lunch time; bring your own stroller/wagon/wheel chair or rent them. The water fountains throughout the park are free.
I just can't say enough good things about it... I've even taken photo classes through the Zoo, Houston Camera Exchange and other instructors with discount tickets available on-line.

This zoo is really doing a superb job, and expanding more and more all the time. It was clean. There was a wide range of animals in what seemed to be excellent enclosures. We spoke with some of the keepers and were very impressed with their enthusiasm.
