“Nice Downtown Hotel”

Stayed at the Magnolia for 3 nights with the family, 2 adults, 2 kids under 4. Was impressed with the hotel and the service, all in all a very enjoyable stay. The rooms (std double) are quite large and include a very nice bathroom, security box, mini-bar, decent TV, and most importantly very comfortable beds. The free breakfast is basic but reasonable, the Starbucks coffee a nice bonus, and the room service very good although quite expensive.
We were coming and going with kids and used the valet parking, good service and very firendly and helpful.
All in all, a great value and good option for downtown Houston.

The Magnolia is a lovely hotel with great perks such as the cookies and milk in the evening, great Starbucks coffee and Tazo tea in the rooms, nice breakfast, complimentary happy hour drinks, etc. The hotel is in a great location right in downtown near to the museums and the ball parks.
Reception staff were very friendly and helpful with good recommendations on where to eat and drink.
We stayed for two nights and, unfortunately they forgot to clean our room. When I called down to reception I received no apology and explained that we would be leaving the room at 5.30 and be back at 6.30 giving them time to freshen up the room and provide us with clean towels. Unfortunately when we returned to the room at 6.30 it was still not cleaned. I called again and the lady was very rude on the phone, in the end she called the maids and we ended up having to go out without showering.
Another thing to watch out for is the phones, we were told it was $10 for one call!!
They also charge a daily amount for valet parking which was not explained to us when we booked.
Apart from this it's a good hotel.

We originally picked the Magnolia due to an expedia deal and having seen several excellent reviews via Trip Advisor we arrived at the hotel with high expectations. The Magnolia did not dissappoint!

Rooms - Spacious and well presented, the kitchenette was stocked with crockery, coffee machine (no kettle though) and starbucks coffee. The extra refrigerator was useful too. Bathroom was large and had a dividing door with a separate dressing area/basin which was handy. TV had good selection of channels and our room on the 6th floor was quiet despite being next to the lifts.

Food - Breakfast was the same each day but of a good quality and constantly refreshed. Hot food on offer was self service - scrambled eggs, potatoes and bacon, all kept very hot (the plates were tiny though, i guess to stop people wasting food). Also on offer was selection of muffins, bagels, fruit, cereal, toast, juices and yoghurt. Starbucks coffee (and decaf) was on tap as was a selection of herbal/fruit teas. I got room service one night but did not particularly enjoy it, soup was cold, salad leaves were dry though the french fries were nice (they were more potato wedges than fries) not great for the price (and the 21% service charge)

Facilities - Gym on the top floor was clean, stocked with towels and water cooler. Rooftop pool area was also clean and tidy with good range of seating/tables. Pool too cold to use for the time of year and was unexpectedly shallow (3ft) Jacuzzi was the complete opposite being too hot to sit comfortably in.

Service - Staff were always friendly and helpful. They organised transport back to airport for my party and sorted out late check-out for me. Rooms were cleaned daily and mini bar kept well stocked.

Area - Downtown Houston is a business district. Aside from a couple of good bars (Flying Saucer was a good place and House of Blues) we found little to do there and very few shops. The Galleria was the closest shopping mall and was a $25 cab ride to get there. Hotel is conveniently located for the Toyota Center and Astros stadium and a short walk to the Metro for access to the Reliant Stadium (about a 30 mins ride)

In all i enjoyed my stay at the Magnolia and would reccomend it particularly if in town for business or having a short stopover. In hindsight staying in downtown Houston on a leisure trip and without a car meant several expensive cab journeys and few decent shops/restaurants/bars locally (the place was deserted at weekends). Read up about reccomended bars/restaurants in the area before you go and you wont get stuck wandering around looking lost like we did!

This is a class act of a hotel. I also liked how close it is to Minute Maid. I'm coming out to Houston in April 2009, but I'm not staying here due to the price.

I've stayed at the Magnolia half a dozen times for business over the past year, most recently for about two weeks on business. The benefits were the nice rooms and bathrooms, as well as the extras, such as breakfast, happy hour, and the cookie buffet. However, the staff (front desk and reservations) just couldn't seem to get it together and were less than responsive. My AC/heater never worked in 2 weeks, despite 3 requests I made for repairs. A Fedex package arrived, and no one informed me or delivered it until two days after it got there (thankfully I didn't need it anymore). Outside callers would call my room and it would go straight to voicemail and never ring in the room - this was never fixed despite 2 complaints. After one late night at work, both of my room keys failed to open the door - when I got to the front desk after having taken the elevator up and down to the 20th floor with full briefcases, the staff person asked me what I had done to demagnetize the keys. Other random bothers (which may seem nitpicky, but still can get a bit annoying after a long stay): no vending machines (only a water/gatorade machine in the gym), ice machines on every 4th floor, no newspaper delivered to your room, and a very limited room service/restaurant menu. On the bright side, the valet and housekeeping were great, there are a number of restaurants and bars nearby, and the complimentary shuttle service is invaluable.

I normally stay in the Galleria area when I come to Houston, which has been every other week for the past year - without a doubt, the Westin and the Omni have superior accommodations. I stayed at the Magnolia because my colleague didn't want to drive into downtown everyday for work. If you plan to stay in Houston over the weekend and aren't going to the ballpark, don't stay downtown - there's nothing to do, restaurants and shops are closed during the day, and the area is a ghost town (and slightly sketchy). If you need to be in Houston for business downtown for a day or two, it may be worth it to stay at the Magnolia for its shuttle and the nearby Main Street restaurants. I think I'll try the Alden or the Icon next time.

My husband & I stay here every year for our anniversary - and to attend Astros games. The rooms are absolutely FABULOUS and very cozy. We can walk to the ball game or to many local eateries. Pretty easy to find in a big city off of a very busy interstate.

Recently I stayed at the Magolia and found it to be wonderful. It has a W-hotel feel to it without all the loudness. The lobby is inviting with nice background music. Courtney and Genevive at the front desk were so helpful.
The room was very spacious and upscale. The entire 2nd floor lounge is worth going to every night for happy hour if you can. They serve cookies and milk after 8pm too! Super comfy feel to it. The few complaints I had were: only 1 glass was ever left in the bathroom along with only one bathrobe. Not enough towels in the bathroom either. The maid should have refilled the bucket of wine with ice but never did and upon delivery of the wine- which they charge 9.50 for gratuity- they forgot the wine opener. There is no music in the room just an alarm clock. While those are minor things, they would truly move this up to a boutique hotel.
All staff were very friendly including valets. Do yourself a favor as another reviewer wrote and use the garage around the corner for parking as it is 26.00 a night to use theirs and it is the same lot they use.
Located in a very cool area of historic downtown, I would happily stay there again~!
